My fiancee and I chose the Hotel Rosenbichl in Berchtesgaden because we had seen several favorable writeups in some of the travel guides we were using to plan our European vacation in September 2004. I made the reservation several weeks in advance and confirmed it with my credit card. The hotel was difficult to find, and when we finally did arrive, the concierge (manager) informed me that there were no rooms available. Surprised, I responded that we had a reservation. He informed me that it didn't matter. Needless to say, I was very frustrated and somewhat angry, but he made several phone calls and informed me that there was a room available at the Hotel Fischer. My fiancee was outraged, however, and she insisted that we demand a room. When she returned to the car, she burst into tears and called him some rather unflattering names. When we arrived at the Hotel Fischer, the concierge informed us that this incompetent oaf had never even spoken to her, but rather had heard from another hotel that the Hotel Fischer had rooms available. Needless to say, I was furious at how mistreated we were by the Hotel Rosenbichl and I would strongly encourage anyone to avoid staying there, if only to avoid the mistreatment that we received. The silver lining in this situation is that we had a very enjoyable time at the Hotel Fischer, as the waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. They were also quite sympathetic to our difficulties and spoke very negatively of the man responsible for them. I would definitely consider staying at the Hotel Fischer again.
