“Simply Amazing”

Vier Jahreszeiten Berchtesgaden

5 of 5 stars
London, England
Feb 6, 2008

The Vier Jahreszeiten hotel in Berchtesgaden is amongst the best hotels we've ever stayed in, and one we now recommend without hesitation to friends considering a stay in the beautiful Obersalzberg region.
The staff are very welcoming, friendly and (thankfully) speak good English! They're also very helpful if you need to arrange taxis, shuttle buses, tours or early-morning breakfast packs. The bedrooms are unexpectedly spacious - and if you get the option of a mountain view, take it! There's little to beat the sight of the lower town spread out beneath you, the view stretching all the way across to the snowy twin peaks of the Watzmann mountains.
The spectacular view also greets you in the morning from the breakfast bar, which offers a substantial Continental breakfast. Dinner is the meal worth staying around for, however - the head chef trained at the Waldorf-Astoria, and it shows! During our two weeks at the hotel the chef took our vegetarian/pescatarian preferences into account and served us some delicious three-course meals.

We came to Berchtesgaden for one day in mid-October to go on the Eagles Nest tour (given by Eagles' Nest Tours, and I highly recommend it). When I saw the outside of the building I was a bit skeptical; however, when we saw our room we fell in love with it. It is not what you would expect in an American hotel. I guess I would call it Bavarian :) Nonethless, the room was very clean with a modern bathroom. The room was the biggest we had in our 2 weeks in Germany/Austria. It had a double bed, a sitting area with a couch and TV that was separated from the bed area by a curtain, and the shower was in a different room than the toilet. We also had a balcony that faced the mountains. We had dinner at the restaurant attached to the hotel and absolutely loved it. In the morning we walked left out the front door around the corner (and over to the opposite side of the street) and had a great little breakfast at a bistro that has windows facing the mountains. We paid about $135 USD for a double room . We thought it was worth it. Also, we booked the room over the phone (after initial contact through their website) since Hotels.com said there weren't any rooms available.

Getting there:
We arrived in Berchtesgaden by train. I had mapped out how to get to the hotel from the train station on foot using Google maps but it had us taking a somewhat circuitous route. The Eagles Nest tour guide gave us the scoop on how to get there more directly. If you exit the train station facing the town center, walk to your right toward the other end of the train station. There should be a stairwell that goes back up into the train station. Go up those stairs until you get to a pedestrian bridge that takes you back over the train tracks and to the shops up the hill behind the train station. We were dragging a moderate amount of luggage so it was a mild workout getting up the hill. At the top of the path you'll be behind some small businesses. Hang a right walking behind the businesses until the path reaches the street level. As you reach the street level the hotel should be just across the street. Not too bad if you can hack a little workout :)

“Wir lieben den Vier Jahreszeiten!!”

Vier Jahreszeiten Berchtesgaden

We stayed at this truly wonderful hotel, owned by the Miller family, for the third time last week, staying 4 nights. We have previously stayed in July 2006 and March 2007, the seasonal climate has made all 3 trips to be very different but all equally fabulous!

We took a taxi from Salzburg airport to the 'Rathaus' in the city, from there the 804 bus to Berchtesgaden Bahnhof, then a taxi to the door of the hotel (total cost for 2 = E22).

We arrived early and, as usual the hotel were very accomodating and let us check-in early. The room was lovely; a seating area, huge bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and comfortable bed. The best thing about the room though was, without a doubt, the breathtaking mountain views. There are no words to describe it!

The restaurant in the hotel serves the best food we have ever eaten! In fact it's worth coming to Berchtesgaden just to eat here! Mr Peter Miller plans the menu and takes great pride in the preparation of the dishes. The food is very inexpensive by comparison to English and most other European restaurants, as is the extensive wine list. Original paintings and hunting trophies, belonging to the Miller family festoon the walls of the restaurant making for a cosy, romantic and traditional Bavarian setting. 'Silver service' makes it special but is by no means intimidating; the service is excellent. The Stuberl, joined to the restaurant offers a less formal dining experience if you want something different.

We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary on the last night and the staff made it very special for us. We stayed up late (rather too late) drinking and chatting with Mr Miller and the staff. We didn't have to ask for a late checkout the next morning - this was offered to us and Mr Miller cooked us breakfast, well after 'closing time' in the breakfast room. (It's probably worth mentioning that the hot and cold buffet breakfast is good too).

We spent our Friday night in the Berchtesgaden Brauhaus (Brewery). There's nothing like this in the UK. The atmosphere is great, Bavarian dancing and traditional food and ales (order a knuckle of Pork to share!). Definatley worth a visit! You should also stop off at the village graveyard on the way back to the hotel; it's a magical place to see at night!

We spent our days mountain walking, stopping off en route to sample the local fayre. You have to visit the 'Eagles Nest '(Hitler's hideout) - even if the history doesn't interest you, the views on a good day are amazing. Neighbouring towns and villages are all within walking distance.

We have noticed there are a lot more beer gardens and mountain restaurants open in the summer months June - Sept than in the winter months, but don't let this deter you. The Golden Bear in the village centre is open all year round and the beer hall upstairs is like something from another time. You can also visit the Salt Mine, the Watzmanntherme and Salzburg, which is a 40 minute bus ride away.

I don't know what else to say. We really love Berchtesgaden and this hotel. We can't understand why everyone isn't going there!

we had a nice room on the front side of the hotel. in the morning we had a wonderfull view of the alps. in the surroundings there are many hiking opportunities.
the hotel is not cheap 125 euro per night ( including breakfast which is ok but nothing special) but it is very clean and the service is ok . the hotel is centrally located. don't expect too much from the villagecentre; after 7.00 pm the centre is empty.
if you don't like hiking; visit hitler's "eagles nest" it''s worth a visit for many reasons; historical, the busride but also the wonderfull views you have.

“Excellent - Look Forward To Visiting Again Next Year”

My family and I visit this beautiful hotel every year and each time, we all thoroughly enjoy our stay. Mr Peter Miller, the owner and chef is an excellent host, very welcoming and an outstanding cook.

The rooms are spacious and very clean and the views down into the valley and over the mountains are breathtaking. The staff are very friendly and attentive.

The food is the best we have experienced in all our travels and both the breakfast and dining areas are very well laid out with a cosy, quaint and welcoming atmosphere.

The shops and cafes etc are within easy walking distance and the locals are very friendly.

The scenery is very beautiful and breathtaking and I would thoroughly recommend holidaying in Berchesgaden for a very peaceful and tranquil stay.

Our family and I are looking forward to returning again next year.
