Stayed for 2 nights in one of their double rooms, southern aspect, with a balcony (No. 59). Very glad we paid the extra as the view of the Watzmann was amazing. We could also see Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) and even though we overlooked the railway station they were the quietest trains ever - could hardly hear them. It was also a pleasure to relax on the balcony in the sun. Room was very comfortable and clean and breakfasts were excellent. Waitress at breakfast couldn't have been more accommodating - just ask if you want anything else. We also dined in their Huberstuben Restaurant on our first night and had an excellent meal. My husband had the pike fresh from the Konigssee and I had the lamb - both wunderbar!
Yes, the communal rooms did look a little dated, but truely Bavarian which for us added to the charm of this lovely hotel. If you want modern and minimalistic then go and stay in the Intercontinental (5/10mins drive away from Berchtesgaden up on the Obersalzburg).
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Berchtesgaden is a beautiful little place with plenty to see in the area. We enjoyed our visits to Kehlsteinhaus, a boat trip on the Konigssee, the Documentation Centre and of course Salzburg. It was also a joy to see so many women wearing the traditional Bavarian dress.
Final tips - we also had good meals in Bier Adam and The Goldener (think it's called) 5 mins walk down the road. Also, I did swim in the pool twice (while hubbie had a siesta) - it is small, but very clean and I had it all to myself which was great. We would definitely stay here again. Go ahead, book and enjoy!
