I really wanted to like this place, but i was pretty disapointed. My girlfriend and I stayed here recently and we had high hopes for the place. We are in our early 30's and on a budget so we booked a room in the attic for 70 euros. with a bath on the second floor (bath very clean, however a good walk from our room.) Our room was really old and smelled heavy of mold and a little like your grandmothers house. They bed was kind of lumpy and a everywhere was dusty. We were going to say something, but then how can you complain to an owner who has obvious pride in the place and whose family went through so much under the third reich. It also was a little creepy as we were like the only one staying in the place and one night in the bar some older gentlemen came in and started playing some sympathic music to a particular party from the 40's. It kind of freeked us out a little and we went straight to our room. In short Frau Schafenburg is super nice, the history itself of the place is amazing, especially the bunkers under the hotel. however this was the most expensive hotel of our trip and it was the most uncomfortable. All in all i am happy i stayed there at least once, however the accomadations need serious updating or a drop in price. I think there are better options around the area.

As a WWII buff, I had become well aware of the history of the Turken & it's association/proximity to many historical footstepping opportunities . Frau Scharfenberg is an unbelievable dynamo and is also very sweet. My room had a balcony facing over the valley and overlooking the site of Hitlers famed Berghof where he spent significant time. When I went out on the balcony, I shook my head in amazement and felt like this is what Germany should be. It was also chilling to see the famous view as seen in so many documentaries. The Turken is quintessential Bavarian with it's common TV room, Haus Bar and true Honor Bar (fully stocked fridge with great German beer, etc) and mythical kitsch (from the hairy beast at the entrance foyer to ward off bad spirits to the antlers mounted all about). And let's not forget the host of things to see including remaining wwII ruins & buildings, Lake Konigsee, the Eagles Nest, Documentation Center, the Bunkers, quaint (if a bit touristy) Berchtesgaden. I can't wait to get back ! check this out before going to enrich the experience thirdreichruins(dot)com (the best site of it's kind bar none !!!). i am NOT the owner of the site.

“Historical hotel”

Hotel zum Turken

Aug 5, 2007

We stayed one night in this historical hotel. This is a lovely property and I am sure was at one time a fabulous resort. The room that we had was reasonable size with a lovely balcony. the "bathroom" was interesting, a very small shower and a toilet behind a curtain. However, the Frau that runs the hotel is the granddaughter of the owner after the war and she is a little dynamo at 75. The hotel is in a fabulous location (it is actually right down the hill from the huge, expensive Intercontinental) a stones throw from the foundations of Hitler's home and within walking distance from the buses that go to Eagles nest. The view is stunning and the breakfast is wonderful. I hope that people patronize this hotel as it would be a shame to lose such an historical place to the likes of the Intercontinental!

“Highlight of my trip”

Hotel zum Turken

The history alone would make a stay in this hotel worthwhile. But the architecture and beauty of the building was just an added bonus. I'm a bit of a WW2 buff, so it was eerie to stand on my balcony and look at Hitler's driveway and see the same breathtaking views that I've seen in so many historical photos.

The owner and staff were friendly and helpful. I needed to check in after their normal check-in hours and they did accommodate me. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious. I enjoyed walking around the area and seeing so much WW2 history. It's quite peaceful and beautiful.

I was traveling through Germany by train and my stay at this hotel would have been easier with a rental car. I had about a 15 minute walk from the bus stop at the Documentation Center with my luggage (luckily I was traveling backpack style). Also, there are really no restaurants within walking distance for dinner, so I ate ate some apples that were in my room along with a protein bar.

I only spent two days in the area, but I would definitely go back for longer and stay at the zum Turken and hike the Obersalzberg area and explore more of Berchtesgaden in the valley floor. This time, however, I would rent a car!
