Wow, we took a chance with this one. Couldn't decide between staying 3 nights right in Berchtesgaden or somewhere on the outskirts with a view. The recent positive reviews for Alpenhotel Denninglehen were not posted when we planned our mid-Sept 2006 trip, but we are in total agreement with them. It's hard to find, high on a hill outside Berchtesgaden, but well worth the search. Our room with balcony overlooked the valley. We had requested a twin, and received a triple (double bed and single bed), Room 26 I think. Very large room, also with a couch and table, and closet. Elevator (big plus). I believe the hotel was built in the 1980's, and so our room was more motel-like than our other experiences on this Germany trip, and the hallways are sort of dark, but the public rooms in the hotel are very well appointed. Breakfast was great. Our limited German matched their limited English but we communicated sufficiently. There are many, many small hotels lining hillsides surrounding the Denninglehen, but the D is well-positioned, high above them all. Star-gazing at night from the balcony was wonderful, with the very dark sky. You need a car to stay here, the location would be impossible to access without it.
