“Luxurious mountain hideout”

InterContinental Resort Berchtesgaden

Feb 22, 2008

My wife and I have stayed at the Intercontinental resort every February for our anniversary ever since it opened. the place is magnificent. Staff super professional, magnificent bar with a huge fire place overlooking the mountains. Wonderful indoor outdoor 35 degree pool. Have to admit that it is remote, somewhat.. A ten minute drive gets you into the heart of Berchtesgaden and a little more into Salzburg. It's the kind of place to splurge, park the car, put up your feet and get pampered! Beware, you will not want to leave!!

The Intercontinental hotel is truly a spectacular property in a gorgeous setting. The consequence for this beauty is it's remoteness. It is located about 35 minutes from Salzburg by taxi on a very steep/narrow mountain road. You may have problems getting a taxi if the car isn't properly equiped for the conditions. The hotel is very contemporary and cosmopolitan in both design and clientel. Most of the hotel staff are able to communicate to a degree in english so not such a problem. The rooms were spacious and extremely well maintained. The SPA and pool facitlities are fantastic with an absolutely gorgeous view of the mountains from the outdoor heated pool. So what was the downside of our stay...the hotel is very limited in dining options. The only casual dining is the hotel bar with a very...very limited menu and extremely long wait times. The bar staff were friendly but the drinks overpriced and who would have expected to see mice run across the lounge literally...ok so they were from the forest and kind of cute....but really at a five star hotel? The breakfast charge was outrageous $50 per person...and there is literally no store of any kind that sells toiletries and essentials. If not for the remoteness I would rate much higher.

“Best Hotel”

After a year travelling to and from Germany (and having stopped in all five other Intercontis in Germany), I can safely say that this is definitely the most spectacular. Situated in Obersalzburg (about 10 minutes drive from Berchtesgaden), the Interconti is in a remote and quiet location. It has one of the best views on the mountain looking down towards Berchtesgaden.
I rented a Duplex suite which has direct views towards Berchtesgaden and over to Austria. I also could see the Kehlsteinhaus (otherwise known as the Eagle's Nest). The suite was very large at 154sqm and had a 40 sqm balcony. Everything was beautifully furnished and comfortable, with the bathroom equipped with large Molton Brown toiletries.
The hotel has an excellent spa; I was welcomed by the Spa Director who was very friendly and helpful. Of particular note is the outdoor swimming pool with can be used all year round. It is possible to swim from the indoor pool area to the outdoor pool via a sliding door which is operated by sensor. Once outdoors one has views of the mountains. All other areas of the spa (including treatment rooms), were impeccable.
The hotel has a number of restaurants, including one holding a Michelin star, Le Ciel - food and service were both impeccable.
In summary, I can safely say that this is an outstanding hotel and I would definitely return. A quick mention for couples: this is a fairytale type location and highly romantic; a tough place to leave.

“Superb first class hotel”

This hotel is absolutely great! The service is impeccable, the furnishings and decor are modern, clean and comfortable, the accommodation is comfortable, large, stylish and spotless, the food is good and overall, the hotel is fantastic.

I received a phone call the day before I was due to check in telling me that the Duplex suite I had booked was unavailable as there were technical problems in the bathroom, I was told that the hotel would give me two nights for the price of one. Upon check in, the hotel apologised again for the problems and invited my wife and I to have dinner in the hotel's restaurant that evening complements of the hotel. In our room, there was a handwritten note from the manager wishing us a pleasent stay.

The TVs are all wall mounted flatscreens, and have the usual BBC World and BBC Prime/CNN fare for English speakers. The location of the hotel is STUNNING -there was snow on the ground when we were there, making the area (surrounded by mountain peaks) seem even more surreal -it really is a mountain retreat. The wasabi nuts in the minibar are powerful, although I liked them, people in my office back in the UK who I was offering them to were less keen!

Overall, this hotel is great, and writing another 1,000 words would not do it justice. In short, every aspect of the service we enountered was 100% satisfactory -breakfast was super, swimming pool (Outdoor and indoor!) were clean and huge, and as I say, the staff make the hotel feel even more luxurious.

    • Liked — The room, the location and the staff
    • Disliked — Nothing really -maybe the lack of many English TV programmes!

This resort claims to be a one of a kind, luxury retreat in the German alps. For the most part, it is superb. The rooms are spacious, well lit, and boast high ceilings. The balcony is large, as well, with a (snail-paced) automated cover that can be employed to protect you from the elements should inclement weather sneak up on you. The flat-screen TV has a good selection of channels, including the standard German children's fare. Our minibar consumption -- including snack bars, chocolate bars, bottled water and juices -- was included in the room rate we selected. A water boiler with a selection of coffee and tea was on-hand. The newspaper arrived at the door punctually each day. We opted for breakfast in the room, which cost us only 2.50 each day (breakfast was included in our rate). The bathroom fixtures are high quality, separate shower, generous sized bathtub, and closed-off toilet for privacy. The toiletries are quite refreshing (macadamia and ginseng shampoo and bath gel).

The bar area is off the main lobby and is inviting with its huge open fireplace. There is a selection of over 100 single malts, and a few good local beers on tap. Afternoon coffee and cake is a pleasure as all the sweets are baked on-site by a capable pastry chef. The service in this area was competent and friendly.

The highlight of the hotel for our visit was the heated outdoor pool. My 6 year-old loves swimming pools and this was a definite treat. Although it was only about 5C outside during our late October/early November visit, we were comfortable in the 35C water! Steam rose into the twilight as we watched the distant lights twinkle from the surrounding mountains.

The only negative I can find -- and it's fairly large -- is the unbearably slow service in the restaurants. We ate three dinners in 360 Restaurant and had different staff each evening. Yet, the result was universal: long waits and forgotten items. This offering must be upgraded if the hotel is to become a true gourmet temple, as they're striving to be. One evening when my wife's main dish failed to arrive, they offered us our wine on the house -- a true rarity in the world of German hospitality.

In summary, we enjoyed our stay here and will surely travel back for a long weekend.
