I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the past 20 years, and it is one of my favorite resort hotels. Unfortunately, the hotel has been bashed around the net lately, a lot of it not being true.

1.Hotel has a serious car parking problem. The hotel building has a small parking lot in the back, which was almost always full. This is sad, but there are buildings around the hotel, and there is just no room to enlarge that lot. You get what you get, and that’s it. There is street parking overnight, and I did not see that being used too much, so there is some leverage there.
2.I have seen comments that the desk stuff does not speak English well. I stayed at the hotel in July ’06 again, and found the desk staff to be fluent in English. On the other hand, it is true that short of the desk stuff there is nobody around. Essentially one carries one’s own luggage, but they do have an elevator (no luggage cart though).
3.The hotel is redoing the kitchen, so the restaurant is closed. They are serving an excellent breakfast buffet, and they have a light café behind the desk which is open. They do not serve regular dinner/lunch, short of some drinks, and some snacks maybe in the café. Hopefully, once they get their kitchen up to speed, they can reopen the excellent restaurant. Ludwig Strasse, the street that the hotel is on, has changed considerably over the past 5 years. It has become a pedestrians only street, by the hotel, and a number of restaurants have opened on it lately, so lunch/dinner should not be a problem.
4.The hotel is wonderful, as far as being compared to a resort hotel, not to a big city center hotel. It has no garage, pool, gym, business center, etc. It is an old building, with antiques and charm. The paint is cracked in many places, and that is something that needs to be addressed ……. but it is not peeling off the walls. The bathroom hardware has various problems, but it is functional (will need to be replaced eventually once they get their kitchen under control).
5.Rooms have nice antique Bavarian furniture, and some of the rooms are wood paneled with wood chandeliers. Rooms have color TVs.
6. Hotel was full in July, and when I made the reservation in March, I needed to buy the room through one of the hotel/airline reservation systems. I paid for the room in advance, and the hotel desk recognized that with no problem. I didn’t have to pay for anything at the hotel once I arrived there.
7.The hotel is a good 15 minutes walk from the train station, but taxi should be available to/from. Hotel is too far to roll a 50-70 lbs suitcase on the sidewalk.

The hotel has plenty of Alpine charm. Dark room with real wood paneling and ceiling, antique furniture and lace. The location is good, on a great street with restuarants and shopping. A pleasant 10 minute walk to the train station. We pulled our luggage on wheels, wasn't too bad. The breakfast was great. Our room really needed new carpet. The bathroom was a bit old, but for this price range it was fine. It was very clean, just getting old. I would surely stay here again. For the price we paid it was a great stay. Garmisch is great. I can't wait to go back.

“A very big disappointment in June of 2004”

I wish I had posted this review earlier, but maybe by posting it now people that want to stay here will do some further investigation to see if improvements have been made since 2004. I read dmc4126@aol.com's review and I was astonished that my experience was identical to his! Everything from the broken kitchen to the broken credit card machine and the requirement to pay in cash. There was a man at the desk when we were there and he spoke no English at all. I don't consider it a criticism, though, because after all we were in Germany, but since so many things were broken or closed it made life difficult. We sayed there in late June, 2004 so the problems described by dmc4126@aol.com continued for over a month and probably for the rest of 2004!

This place may be ok now, and hopefully someone who stayed there recently will post a review, but checkon it's current status before staying there!

I have previously had really good stay at this hotel, full of character, beautiful old fashioned rooms, really good food etc. However there was definitely a serious decline so I stayed elsewhere this winter Jan 2005.
Reason - change of management - old owner running the place down and selling. Having spoken to the new manager and staff, there is a major upgrade now taking place so should be O.K. for summer 2005. I certainly indend to go back for the ski jumping on Jan 1st 2006.

we visited in late may, 2004. like the previous reviewer i booked the hotel based on travel guides and especially tripadvisor comments. this was the only location where i was dissapointed in the venue and my experience is very close to the previous reviewer so i won't bother you with the redunancy except to say that i share the same views. the hotel and the staff were all rather dark, depressing and unresponsive.

why the varying opinions? it really sounds like a change of management/ownership to me.

the garmish area was quaint, beautiful, clean and unique but it did not compare to our alpine experience in wengen, switzerland.

i do not plan to revisit garmisch but, if i do i will not stay at this hotel.
