I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the past 20 years, and it is one of my favorite resort hotels. Unfortunately, the hotel has been bashed around the net lately, a lot of it not being true.
1.Hotel has a serious car parking problem. The hotel building has a small parking lot in the back, which was almost always full. This is sad, but there are buildings around the hotel, and there is just no room to enlarge that lot. You get what you get, and that’s it. There is street parking overnight, and I did not see that being used too much, so there is some leverage there.
2.I have seen comments that the desk stuff does not speak English well. I stayed at the hotel in July ’06 again, and found the desk staff to be fluent in English. On the other hand, it is true that short of the desk stuff there is nobody around. Essentially one carries one’s own luggage, but they do have an elevator (no luggage cart though).
3.The hotel is redoing the kitchen, so the restaurant is closed. They are serving an excellent breakfast buffet, and they have a light café behind the desk which is open. They do not serve regular dinner/lunch, short of some drinks, and some snacks maybe in the café. Hopefully, once they get their kitchen up to speed, they can reopen the excellent restaurant. Ludwig Strasse, the street that the hotel is on, has changed considerably over the past 5 years. It has become a pedestrians only street, by the hotel, and a number of restaurants have opened on it lately, so lunch/dinner should not be a problem.
4.The hotel is wonderful, as far as being compared to a resort hotel, not to a big city center hotel. It has no garage, pool, gym, business center, etc. It is an old building, with antiques and charm. The paint is cracked in many places, and that is something that needs to be addressed ……. but it is not peeling off the walls. The bathroom hardware has various problems, but it is functional (will need to be replaced eventually once they get their kitchen under control).
5.Rooms have nice antique Bavarian furniture, and some of the rooms are wood paneled with wood chandeliers. Rooms have color TVs.
6. Hotel was full in July, and when I made the reservation in March, I needed to buy the room through one of the hotel/airline reservation systems. I paid for the room in advance, and the hotel desk recognized that with no problem. I didn’t have to pay for anything at the hotel once I arrived there.
7.The hotel is a good 15 minutes walk from the train station, but taxi should be available to/from. Hotel is too far to roll a 50-70 lbs suitcase on the sidewalk.
