“Noisy Hotel Herzog”

Hotel Herzog

2 of 5 stars
Australia
Jun 17, 2008

I have quite a few good things to write about this hotel including the amazing breakfast that was included in the price of the twin room I book - both myself and my traveling companion rated it highly. The woman on the desk when we checked in was extremely helpful, she flipped out a map and showed us how to get around Munich and where the good tourist spots were. I found this hotel was in an OK location but the traffic noise was just awful! If you stay in this hotel demand a room that does not face the road, also it was quite warm in Munich the nights we stayed and as the Herzog has no AC it got quite stuffy in our room. All up, nice hotel but would probably pass on staying here again.

“Good Hotel, Very Good Value”

Hotel Herzog

Mar 22, 2008

Stayed at the hotel a week ago.

Pros:
- very friendly staff
- were given the choice between two rooms to pick
- location (just three stations from Marienplatz)
- excellent breakfast, way above standard German hotel
- nice light fluffy blankets
- cheap (when there is no Oktoberfest)

Cons:
-tiny bath

Overall the rooms are pretty basic in their setup. A small tv, a bed, a chair or two a desk and a small wardrobe, that is it. But if you just for a place to sleep with a comfortable bed and a good breakfast to start the day, this will be a good choice.

Of course, during the Oktoberfest they charge an arm and a leg, but it is walking distance and all of Munich is commiting highway robbery during those two weeks. As they do everywhere in the world during festival times.

Lovely little hotel, very close to transport. Staff were really friendly, and the breakfast was great. Rooms are a little outdated, but nice and quiet.

“This is a Hostel, not a Hotel”

Hotel Herzog

I have stayed at hostels that were 10 times nicer than Hotel Herzog. Although we had very few choices around Oktoberfest, paying $270 a night to stay here was ridiculous. My husband had to sleep in two separate beds that were smaller than twin beds - out feet were hanging off the beds!

At least the breakfast they served was OK. I would NOT recommend this place. At the end of our trip, we stayed at Hotel Adria in Munich which was much better.

“Average hotel; poor value for money”

Hotel Herzog

Thought it might be fun to see what the opening of Oktoberfest was like, so added a day in Munich onto a business trip to Germany and Italy. The Herzog was chosen for its proximity to Oktoberfest site (and the price was no doubt correspondingly inflated for the event). Overall it didn't disappoint, but for 220 Euros one might legitimately expect a bit more than the hostel-esque ambiance of the Herzog. Negatives included monastically blank decor and miniscule bathrooms with borderline unusably small shower. Pluses included helpful multi-lingual desk staff; generous breakfast in pleasant surroundings; small bar off lobby; free wi-fi in the room. Depending on your preference for bustle, distance from the center (20 minute walk) could be either good or bad thing (though the UBahn station Goetheplatz is only five minutes away). Biggest downside was quite simply the cost -- the week following, I spent about the same for a really lovely four star hotel in Venice (yes, in Venice!) than I did for the Herzog. So my visit taught me two things: the next time I'm in Munich I'll probably avoid Oktoberfest, and chose a different hotel than the Herzog.
