Our party of six stayed at Hotel Herzog from 12/19-12/21/06. We had rooms on the 3rd floor, at the back of the hotel. The rooms were very quiet until the school behind the hotel was in session, but that didn't really interfere with sleeping.

The rooms, however have seen better days. Although an adequate size, they need refurbishing, especially the wooden floors. The bathroom is very small. One of the rooms was very smokey. It had to be aired out the entire day while we were gone.

We all immensely enjoyed the great variety at breakfast. There were a couple of hot choices (eggs, wurst, potato patties) and a wide selection of breads, cold cuts, cheeses, and cereals.

Another plus was the location to the transporation. We found getting to and from the Hauptbahnhof and the Marienplatz very easy.

We stayed at the Herzog for one night while visiting Munich, and chose it because of the price and location.
As previous posters have mentioned, it is VERY close to the Oktoberfest site, which means that September is high season for them. When we stayed they were still busy, but the price was an incredible €71 for two, including breakfast. They are about 2 minutes' walk from the U-Bahn which will take you straight into the heart of the city. There are also plenty of restaurants in the area.
Rooms are a good size, basic but comfortable, although ours was in need of a little TLC around the edges. The bathroom was fine for one night.
The breakfast was incredible for the price we paid - cold meats, cheese, hot sausage, egg, cereals, yoghurt, fruit, about 6 different types of bread and 5 different pastries. It was also beautifully decorated!
The staff were friendly and helpful.

We stayed at the Herzog for 4 nights during Oktoberfest and liked it. There were 4 people in our room, so with the double bed, plus the pull out sofa, I still think the room wasn't THAT small. After being in hotels in Paris and Italy, I felt the rooms here were large for a European hotel in the heart of a major city. I dont' agree with the person that mentioned the high tubs. I'm 5'6" and had no problem getting in and out of the tub? The layout of the tub is to be desired (always bumping into things...soap dish, etc) but not horrible. Had a room overlooking the courtyard and it was pleasant.

We chose this hotel because of the proximity to the Oktoberfest grounds, maybe 500 meters at most. The breakfast was abundant but I would say only a little more than average. Loved that it was maybe 100 meters to the U-bahn. We would definitley stay here again. I also disagree about the staff. They were always helpful and spoke pretty good English.

We stayed at the Herzog for two nights. The room was very small, but clean and adequate, we had a good view over the spires of Munich. The breakfast was well above average for the size of the hotel, lots of choice and the dining rrom looked recently refurbished. The staff were freindly and very helpful ( I had confused the booking , they sorted quickly without fuss). Overall if you want clean, cheap accommodation near the centre of town then consider the Herzog.
