Originally this Opera House was constructed in the late 1800s. It was destroyed in 1944, and didn't reopen until 1981. Evidently the rebuilding was controversial because some people wanted to rebuild it exactly as it had been, while others wanted to build in a modern style. In the end, the exterior and parts of the interior were rebuilt to look exactly like the original building.
They did a great job. It doesn't have that fake look that new buildings often have when they are imitating older styles. Even if you don't have time to go inside or see a concert there, it's in a central location and worth a walk by if you're in the area. Fressgass, a pedestrian street filled with places to eat, connects the Alte Oper to the Hauptwache.
