“new year in palma”

Hotel Horizonte

4 of 5 stars
england

My wife and I have just returned from the horizonte where we took our mothers for the new year. We had new year there 3 years ago and it has not changed. Some of their staff have been with them for over 40 years. It is mainly a spanish hotel, only met 1 english couple over our 5 day stay. My motherinlaw is quite fussy about her food but there was no problems.

The hotel has a great view point accross the bay and as is 2 star is worth paying for a superior room with a sea view, which still is good value for money.

Three course evening/midday meal buffet style was 10 euro.
Breakfast 5 euros with plenty of choice, cheaper and better than an equivalent etap hotel.

If you are elderly you may be restricted unless you are prepared to pay for taxis which are reasonable and if there are 4 of you not much dearer than the bus into palma.

You can also hire a car from 25 euro a day from opposite the hotel.

Didn't see one cockroach and had no trouble with the staff all of which were freindly and helpful. Would recommend for a city type break as makes a good base. Clean no frills very good value for money

“A few quirks, superb view”

Hotel Horizonte

Stayed here during Easter season. Check-in went fine and we got a room in the annex meaning we had to cross the pool area. This means some stairs, which may be a problem for handicapped people. Room had a less than perfect view of a construction site, which we really disliked because we favour sitting on the balcony and having a drink in the evening. Everything seemed nice and clean - certainly no cockroaches - but a bit "used" in the charming sort of way. Had a problem with the reception once, where we had to wait for a (too) long time before we could ask a simple question. Had to ask for help on another occasion and got a very good treatment, though. Bar is big and certainly comfortable with nice, big chairs and tables and a great view of the seaside. Unfortunately, the bar was short of some of the ingredients in some of my favourite drinks. There's a fantastic view of the bay area from the roof of the annex, which was simply a joy. The restaurant is okay, but it was a bit tedious to wait in queue for wine. Location is okay with charming steep roads sloping their way and public transport reasonably nearby.

“2* Place with great Views”

Hotel Horizonte

The 2* rating on this hotels right no bells or whistles just a clean functional hotel with the basics.

First the room, very large could have slept 4 of use easy, but the air con did not work. and we didnt have a balcony, a few rooms didnt because of the layout of the building, the TV only had Spanish stuff showing but the bar had sky TV and showed the football, talking about the bar for £2.50 you could get a massive measure of vodka or JD etc.

Getting back to the room the shower was the most powerful one I have ever been in wastes loads of water I would think, the room needed more lights it was a bit dark.

You can hire a Wii if its raining in the bar and they also have WiFi for free or is £2 for the computers in the lobby.

Staff were ok, seemed to be busy/rushed most of the time.
Breakfast was not great, but for the money I didnt expect much. If you love a fry up you will need to pop down to the porto pi shops/cafes.

Views from almost all parts of the hotel are great over looking the port and marina, see all the criuse ships come in.

Getting to the hotel is easy apart from the 100 or so steps to get up the hill.

We suggest get the number 1 bus to porto Pi Shopping centre from the airport then get a taxi up the hill to the Horizonte so you can get your bearings.
Getting to the city centre you can get the no1 bus but if you get the 46 it goes up the hill further.

There is a lovely little resturant half way down the hill at the bottom of the steps, it has a small gate leading into it and serves italian dishes the name escapes us at the mo but you will see it.

Also if you need a car there is a hire office opposite the hotel and a little shop 2 mins away.

Bus to magaluf Beach is 106/7 red and yellow.

Have a good holiday!!

“Where is the management”

Hotel Horizonte

2 of 5 stars
Canterbury, United Kingdom
Oct 31, 2007
6/12 found this review helpful

Me and my wife stayed in Hotel Horizonte Palma from 21/10/2007 until 29/10/2007. We enjoyed Palma and Mallorca, however, the hotel itself was far from satisfactory.

I wish to raise a number of points:

1. The hotel in its present state is shabby, worn and the interior in desperate need of an overhaul.

2. The hotel has cockroaches, in fact there was one staring at us one evening from the dessert section of the buffet; the dinner lady dealt with it's presence swiftly and with aplomb, leading me to believe the occurrence of such events was common place. The presence of the cockroaches must be very disheartening to the kitchen staff and chef who do their best to put on a good spread of food.

3. The dining area directly in front of the swimming pool was closed and dead cockroaches could clearly be seen lying on the floor.

4. Reception were less than helpful, sloppy and indeed cold. They were unprofessionally dressed and failed to greet customers returning to the hotel, indeed once there, you felt as though you did not exist. Any request for information was met with a couldn't care less/too much trouble attitude, and I cite the request for a hairdryer in our room, request for a taxi, request for tourist information and request for the left luggage key locker as examples. The phone always took precedence over the person at reception, leaving you with the distinct impression that once at the hotel , they had 'got you', and were more concerned with getting their next booking than with your stay. On checking out we were not asked how our stay was or indeed met with any pleasantries, something which does not happen in other hotels. One non local receptionist was extremely cold in her manner.

5. The management of the hotel were nowhere to be seen, they did not introduce themselves or make themselves known to guests, and that is after all their responsibilty; they were not proactive - read into that what you will.

6. The hotel would do well to employ the evening dinner lady, breakfast servers, kitchen staff and room cleaners at reception, because they were the people who literally made our stay, without them it would have been thorougly depressing. They were smart in apperance, professionally dressed, pleasant, professional, cheerful, hardworking, thorough and the only ones who took the role of customer service seriously. The hotel would have serious problems were it not for the dedication and good will of these people, ironic really that those at grass roots were the ones literally holding the hotel together, yet probably on the lowest wages. As evidenced by the cockroaches, the management do not seem to accept that their hotel has any problems, nor are they willing to do anything about them, instead, they rely on the staff listed above to battle it out alone on the 'firing line' and cater for their guests, indeed thay seem to manage the hotel themselves.

7. On a positive note, the view of the bay from our room was pleasant.

And finally, we booked our hotel through Travel Republic - take little notice of their reviews of hotel horizonte, as it is quite clear they are sanitised and screened before being posted on their web pages.

Management Response
HOTEL HORIZONTE Andreu, Manager
(Management representative)
Nov 8, 2007
Dear Sir .
My name is Andreu , I,m the manager of Hotel Horizonte , and I,m 7 days a week working at the Hotel . Its ashame that you don´t ask to speak with me during your stay because sure I could assist you and your wife .
Thanks for this comment that can help me to improve the level of services and also my apologizes for not having introduced directly to you . There,s 400 persons at the Hotel dayly and normally they stay for 3 days max . so sometime is a bit difficult to introduce to everyone . I,m always open to all my clients .
Hotel Horizonte is a Family independent Hotel , I don´t discuss that you don´t like the dress of our staff , my father,s also don,t like , but many clients loves our trendy HOLA AMIC t-shirts . I,m happy with the comment of my staff except the reception ones .
About the criticism to me , I,m not replying and I accept .
The bar at the Pool is opened from March to September and the view of the winter bar is excellent .
Just remember you that the worse storm in Mallorca in last century was just a couple of days ago from your visit .
To finish I would like to thnaks your coments and leave my contact when you,re comming again to Mallorca .
Sincerely Andreu .

“A little too far outside the centre”

Hotel Horizonte

Oct 21, 2007
2/6 found this review helpful

We stayed at the Horizonte for 4 days in October. We had read reviews stating that the hotel is approx 2 kilometres outside the centre, but like another reviewer says this figure should be at least doubled. We are fairly young and fit (in our 40's) but it took us 50 minutes to walk to the hotel from the centre and on top of that you have an extremely steep climp up a hill to the hotel itself.

A taxi directly to the hotel was in the region of 12 euros, and we did take the No 1 bus a couple of times into town.

Our room had a partial view of the harbour where the cruise ships dock, but it was a little on the shabby side (holes in the wall), and no hairdryer in the room. We also had to run the water for an awfully long time before we could have a hot shower.

The reception staff were polite but I would not call them friendly.

Palma itself was lovely, lots of great restaurants and bars, great shopping and the view from the castle is fabulous.

If I was going back to Palma I would definately pay a little extra and stay in a hotel nearer to the centre.
