“bugs!”

Hotel Horizonte

May 25, 2008
3/4 found this review helpful

1.) BUGS IN MY BED-- after complaining about this we were promptly moved to a second room, which ALSO had bugs in the bed! After this we demanded a refund and moved across the street to Hesperia, which we highly recommend although much more expensive.

2.) Rooms were large but run down--in need of renovation

3.) Free breakfast, but we never got to experience because we left

4.) Our last night was booked on a separate reservation. After cancelling the first two nights we requested to cancel the third night which ended up being a huge hassle. We had to return to the hotel three times and press the issue which was very inconvenient because it was our vacation time and which we were VERY upset with because the BUGS in OUR BED did not make it hard to get refunded the first time but made extremely difficult for the separate reservation. They said they were not able to cancel our reservation because it was made through an agency but in the end once we had complained enough, it turned out that it was irrelevant that we had used an agency and were able to cancel with the click of a button.

5) Close to Porto Pi Commercial Center, not very close to center of Palma however it is not necessary to be close to the center since there isn's a whole lot going on and its not where the beaches are. 5 euro cab ride to most of the clubs/bars at night which is about half the distance to the center of Palma.

“Hotel Horizonte & Palma”

Hotel Horizonte

Hi all T.A.'s & thanks for all info on Hotel Horizonte Palma Mallorca. It was on these recommendations that we booked ; we found them to be pretty accurate & having just returned would like to pass on impressions which may be of help to other T.A's. We certainly would concur with the advice to up-grade to a sea-view room ( £7 per night) with the proviso that depending on where your room is located within the open E-shaped block, that determines the view. If you are lucky and get an upper floor of the 9, then you will see the 'posh yachties' in the Marina; if, like us you are lower down, you will see the ferry & container port with a mild whiff of diesel in the air. However, I think Hotel Horizonte offers good value for money. The room was clean & decent with the sea-view balcony &plenty of wardrobe space. The buffetbreakfast was good with plenty of choice and the 3-course dinner excellent value for €10. The dining-room staff were always helpful & smiling unlike some of the Reception desk which after all is the first point of contact. When we checked in, we were handed a credit-card style room-entry card which also doubles as a room power card which one inserts into a slot once in the room. How difficult was it to tell me that whilst I was in Reception, Eduardo ? We found the city a little disappointing. The Cathedral & the Castle are a must, but after that not too much frankly & we struggled to find a decent restaurant. We got kicked out of a classy Italian at 10pm as the staff were dressed to go home and after experiencing the buzz & vitality of Madrid's Plaza Major with its ornate balconies & murals, the Palma version had literally one man & his dog + us two at 10pm ! The train to Soller is a must-go. Buy a single for €9, have breakfast in the town then tram or walk ( we did, it's not that far ) to Port Soller with its enclosed bay. Have lunch at Bodega de Torre just short of the town & forget the touristy 'caffs' along the prom. When you are ready to return, catch the Panoramic bus ( not the faster & cheaper Tunnel bus ) sit on the right-hand side & marvel at the sea-views , the mountains & particularly the quaint villages you pass through. For less than €4, it represents the best deal on the island. Hope this helps. ENJOY jim

“Home away from Home”

Hotel Horizonte

Hi have stayed at the Hotel Horizonte approx 10 times in the last 12 years. I have seen the hotel before and after Andreu and his family took over AMIC hotels. Great improvement with their take over.
I travel from Canada usually anually to stay at this hotel. I always get a warm welcome back from the staff. Janka(??) in the dining room always has a smile on her face and greets you. The food is basic, but always good and lots to choose from at the buffet. Salads, hots dishes ranging from fish, beef, pork and chicken dishes. Breakfast is a large variety to choose from from cold to a hot breakfast.
The bar possible has the best Sangria on the island and is not expensive. Juan at the bar is always happy to pour you another glass of that home made Sangria with a smile.
The rooms have everything you need in them with full bathroom and 2 twins or 1 double bed. Try to book the superior room or Jr. Suites and you will not be sorry. They are in the main building and are on the upper floors with Views over the bay to Die for!! Breath taking can not describe it when the ships are in at night.
The hotel is up on the hill so if you have walking problems then make sure you grab a cab to go up and down the hill. Only a couple euros and will save you the trouble.
Porto Pi shopping center is 5 mins walk from the hotel and is the largest shopping mall on the island. Well worth the visit to the shops.
The hotel is not on the beach, but Cala Mayor is only 10-15 minutes walking from the hotel or 2 minutes in a taxi.
Playa de Palma beach is at the other end of the city center and is 10 minutes in a taxi or you can take the bus which has a stop down at the bottom of the hill by Porto Pi. There you can also take the bus into the city center which will take you about 10 minutes on the bus. I a taxi 5 minutes.
I have read a lot of negative reviews on the Horizonte and I think if you are looking at booking this hotel you need to know it is a 2 star family run clean hotel, not a 5 star which some of the reviews I have read people seem to think they are booking into.
The only negative think I can say is sometimes you will have trouble getting a sun lounger. To that I say go to the beach and enjoy your stay.
See you in May Andreu!!

“new year in palma”

Hotel Horizonte

4 of 5 stars
england

My wife and I have just returned from the horizonte where we took our mothers for the new year. We had new year there 3 years ago and it has not changed. Some of their staff have been with them for over 40 years. It is mainly a spanish hotel, only met 1 english couple over our 5 day stay. My motherinlaw is quite fussy about her food but there was no problems.

The hotel has a great view point accross the bay and as is 2 star is worth paying for a superior room with a sea view, which still is good value for money.

Three course evening/midday meal buffet style was 10 euro.
Breakfast 5 euros with plenty of choice, cheaper and better than an equivalent etap hotel.

If you are elderly you may be restricted unless you are prepared to pay for taxis which are reasonable and if there are 4 of you not much dearer than the bus into palma.

You can also hire a car from 25 euro a day from opposite the hotel.

Didn't see one cockroach and had no trouble with the staff all of which were freindly and helpful. Would recommend for a city type break as makes a good base. Clean no frills very good value for money

“A few quirks, superb view”

Hotel Horizonte

Stayed here during Easter season. Check-in went fine and we got a room in the annex meaning we had to cross the pool area. This means some stairs, which may be a problem for handicapped people. Room had a less than perfect view of a construction site, which we really disliked because we favour sitting on the balcony and having a drink in the evening. Everything seemed nice and clean - certainly no cockroaches - but a bit "used" in the charming sort of way. Had a problem with the reception once, where we had to wait for a (too) long time before we could ask a simple question. Had to ask for help on another occasion and got a very good treatment, though. Bar is big and certainly comfortable with nice, big chairs and tables and a great view of the seaside. Unfortunately, the bar was short of some of the ingredients in some of my favourite drinks. There's a fantastic view of the bay area from the roof of the annex, which was simply a joy. The restaurant is okay, but it was a bit tedious to wait in queue for wine. Location is okay with charming steep roads sloping their way and public transport reasonably nearby.
