“Fantastic hotel in a brilliant location”

Melia Palas Atenea

We visited Palma for a 3 night break and usually stay in the much pricier Portixol, however, seeing the great reviews on this site and having gone on a recce to the hotel during our last stay at Portixol in May this year, we were very pleased we had given it a try this time.

We were a bit sceptical about the rooms having read that they were a bit dated but we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, they may be a little dated and could do perhaps with the sofas updating etc, but they are immaculately clean, very spacious, fantastic storage, have excellent soundproofing and the TV even has ITV1 and BBC1 channels as well as Sky News!!! We had a room overlooking the pool/Cathedral/harbour and I would highly recommend this.

The pool area is well catered for with huge free pool towels and comfortable sunbeds.

Some good restaurants and bars to choose from nearby and we would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is excellent. Great room, fantastic view of the bay looking over to the cathedral. Breakfast was very impressive, as was all the interior of the hotel. The staff were all pleasant and efficient. The pool area as lovely. I would certainly return.

Wanting to escape from our exceptionally bad summer decided on a long weekend in the sun. Wanting a combined city and beach break, decided on Palma which proved ideal and chose this hotel mainly for the breakfast reviews! The buffet did not disappoint-even tried some Mallorcan specialities-hmm not sure little meat pies are really my thing. Seriously though, there was absolutely everything you could ask for. Don't bother booking anything but a sea/cathedral view-the back of the hotel is pretty grotty. The views are stunning. Booked direct with the Melia group and was given a MAS loyalty card number-this was worth having as it entitled us to check out at 4pm-a godsend as we had an evening flight. We also have from just this short stay almost enough points for a free night at a chain hotel. The room was extremely pleasant and spacious. There was even a pillow menu you could order from if you didn't like the ones provided. My husband tried it out and his order arrived very promptly. The pool area was nice and the traffic noise not too intrusive-we didn't use it until the last day but it seemed very popular. The only slight critcism I can think of is the dark dated lobby-with a slightly strange smell--which could look stunning with a bit of refurbishment. By the way, don't worry about the lifts-they are fine and easy to use (what is this obsession with them?!)

“Great hotel, shame about the waiters...”

Melia Palas Atenea

Sep 26, 2007

Stayed at the Melia Palas Atenea for a few days in September 2007.
It is a really nice hotel and, as other reviewers have commented, it is well worth paying the extra for a room with a sea view.
The rooms are above average size with a seating area and a good balcony overlooking the pool and the bay. The decor is probably slightly dated now, but not shabby.
The pool is sea water and very refreshing and there is bar service right there which is handy for those days when you can't be bothered to move very far. The pool does overlook the main promenade, including the traffic, but I can't say that I found this to be a problem.
The walk into Palma's centre looks miles away, but actually only takes 15 mins. There is a good little bar/cafe next to the hotel which does breakfast (both ensaimadas and full English!) and a limited selection of restaurants within about 5 mins walk either side. There seem to be a lot of Italian restaurants, for some reason.
Partly I guess because it is not exactly the cheapest hotel in Palma, the Palas does seem to attract an older crowd. This may be the explanation behind my complaint about the hotel. We tried to eat in the hotel restaurant one night, and asked the guy who appeared to be in charge if we could have a table for two in my most polite Spanish. The restaurant was by no means full. He barked something at me in Spanish in reply and waved a hand at me in a dismissive gesture. I asked him what he had said and he turned his back on me and busied himself putting invoices through the till. Three other waiters walked past us several times whilst we were stood there and completely ignored us. In the end, after a good five mins standing there like idiots, we walked out and ate elsewhere. All of the other customers in the restaurant at the time appeared to be about twenty years older than us, although we are no youngsters! I can only assume that this guy did not like the look of us for some reason - either because we were two women or because we didn't fit the kind of picture he had of hotel residents. Whatever it was, he was the loser as we went elsewhere, spent more money than we would have done and left someone else a nice big tip! However, it was embarrassing and rude.

“Would recommend a stay at Palas Atenea”

Just returned from the Palas Atenea, booked a front sea & catherdral view, we were on the 6th floor and had a fabulous view, the cathedral is lit up at night, perfect for sitting on the balcony with a bottle of Cava. Staff very friendly, rooms clean and nicely furnished if a bit dated. Good selection of restaurants close by, a couple of doors from the hotel is the Piccola italia, we ate there several times, very extensive menu, homemade pasta. Palma city centre is a pleasant walk away about 20 mins slow walk. Lots of small streets with loads of tapas restaurants, you need to look up the side streets to find the best choices.
If we return to Palma would definately stay at this hotel again.
