Stayed at the Melia Palas Atenea for a few days in September 2007.
It is a really nice hotel and, as other reviewers have commented, it is well worth paying the extra for a room with a sea view.
The rooms are above average size with a seating area and a good balcony overlooking the pool and the bay. The decor is probably slightly dated now, but not shabby.
The pool is sea water and very refreshing and there is bar service right there which is handy for those days when you can't be bothered to move very far. The pool does overlook the main promenade, including the traffic, but I can't say that I found this to be a problem.
The walk into Palma's centre looks miles away, but actually only takes 15 mins. There is a good little bar/cafe next to the hotel which does breakfast (both ensaimadas and full English!) and a limited selection of restaurants within about 5 mins walk either side. There seem to be a lot of Italian restaurants, for some reason.
Partly I guess because it is not exactly the cheapest hotel in Palma, the Palas does seem to attract an older crowd. This may be the explanation behind my complaint about the hotel. We tried to eat in the hotel restaurant one night, and asked the guy who appeared to be in charge if we could have a table for two in my most polite Spanish. The restaurant was by no means full. He barked something at me in Spanish in reply and waved a hand at me in a dismissive gesture. I asked him what he had said and he turned his back on me and busied himself putting invoices through the till. Three other waiters walked past us several times whilst we were stood there and completely ignored us. In the end, after a good five mins standing there like idiots, we walked out and ate elsewhere. All of the other customers in the restaurant at the time appeared to be about twenty years older than us, although we are no youngsters! I can only assume that this guy did not like the look of us for some reason - either because we were two women or because we didn't fit the kind of picture he had of hotel residents. Whatever it was, he was the loser as we went elsewhere, spent more money than we would have done and left someone else a nice big tip! However, it was embarrassing and rude.
