“Spectacular views and a very comfortable hotel”

AC Palau de Bellavista

Apr 26, 2008

I was in Girona to give a presentation at a work congress and this was my first visit (only 2 nights and 1.5 days).

The BellaVista hotel has spectacular views over the city to the mountains.

My room was very comfortable and modern (without being
souless). Staff were caring and courteous and INTERESTED in looking after guests (not always a feature of similar 'hip' -style hotels).

I ate in the hotel restaurant one evening - interesting menu - modern cooking using Catalanian ingredients, good value for money given the excellent standard of food and service. There are dozens of interesting restaurants in the old city (lunchtime menus of the day looked especially good value). As a northern hemisphere person it is always a 'challenge' to stay awake for dinner in Spain (dinner starts at 9.30pm/10pm!) but the food, location and company makes it possible!

Fortunately I slept very well (extremely important to me as I was working); room service breakfast arrived promptly both days and set me up to be able to work effectively with my Spanish hosts.

The Bellavista was such a good experience that I've booked a weekend in September to stay with my husband to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. Our 16 year old daughter won't be included this time - but Girona would be a terrific place for her (it has a university so there's a good 'young' scene), She'd love this hotel.

I did manage to get into the city centre to buy her a couple of summer tops (I didn't have much time and it seems there is a 2-4 hour closure for shops in the middle of the day but they re-open later in the afternoon and into the evening) In the old city there are a miriad of small shops and options for clothes shopping looked good.

It will be fantastic to have the time to relax fully in such a lovely hotel, explore the beautiful cily and share Catalonia together in the autumn.

“Lovely building”

AC Palau de Bellavista

Apr 8, 2008

My husband and I stayed at this hotel with our friends for four nights in March. After reading the reviews, I looked forward with interest and wondered whether the hotel really was up such a steep hill. It was!! A real trek in fact. Also the bathroom at night floodlit the bedroom as previous writers said. Saying that, the rooms were lovely - minimalistic and modern but really comfortable. Why oh why did the designer not put safes in the rooms? Even though the safe in reception was free, it was inconvenient. The 'view' of the Japanese garden was a laugh - more like a view of other bedrooms.

The minibar provided soft drinks, water and beer which was very nice but the free pastries and tea and coffee in the reception area must have now finished. There were none when we were there - we asked but were told that they were available after midnight.

The restaurant prices were very high so we ate in the town instead and found a lovely restaurant where the locals ate. I would say you need a car to stay at this hotel , however parking in Girona is far from easy. We used this as a base to visit Barcelona and the coast and really enjoyed the experience.

Would I visit this hotel again? No. It was a hotel geared largely for the conference market. It was quiet, with no atmosphere at all. Tourists would be better off staying in the town centre.

“We liked this hotel”

AC Palau de Bellavista

4 of 5 stars
Leicester, England
Mar 2, 2008

Stayed at the Palau for one night in Feb and two nights at another Girona hotel - wish we had stayed all three nights at the Palau. Paid just over £60 for our stay, breakfast NOT included. We did not have breakfast in the hotel as we did not consider the additional cost to our room only rate was good value.

Room was very clean and very comfortable. Staff were very helpful. As stated in many previous reviews, there is a free minibar in the room and free drinks and snacks available in the reception area. At evening when the beer in reception ran out new supplies were quickly bought to cheers from the people present!

There is a lovely outside terrace though on our too brief visit it rained and then rained some more so we did not take advantage. However, in summer I would imagine it to be a lovely place to sit and admire the view. I notice that a previous reviewer did not like the view (famous scene from Fawlty Towers springs to mind!) - we found it very attractive - see photos attached.

The location will not suit everybody though we found no problem with the fifteen minute walk to the old town and the longer, though very leisurely uphill walk back.

For the price paid I thought the AC Palau was excellent value. We liked it and will stay here again when next in Girona.

“Bella vista indeed”

AC Palau de Bellavista

Stayed here end of October/early November with my wife and daughter. The location is a little way outside the old centre but if you are reasonably fit and used to walking it is not a problem. The upside is no external noise to interrupt your sleep (other guests are another matter) and the views are spectacular.
My wife and I couldn't really make up our minds about the hotel design. From the outside it isn't that attractive but when you get inside the huge walls of glass make the most of the location with a wonderful vista of Girona to the mountains beyond. We were blessed with lovely weather during our stay and several glorious sunsets were enjoyed from the hotel terrace.
The reception staff were polite and the staff serving at breakfast were very friendly and made a really positive impression on our 6 years old daughter. Breakfast was ok nothing more and given the hotel location alternatives are a fair walk away so perhaps more variety should be offered.
We changed room after the first night (we stayed for 5) due to inconsiderate older Spanish guests who decided to leave the function they were attending in the restaurant downstairs to stand in the lobby/lounge area laughing and joking with each other until 2am which prompted a phone call to reception who dealt with the matter accordingly (while attracting some verbal abuse from senior Spanish citizens who should have known better). After this episode we experienced no further problems as our room was further down the corridor away from the lounge.
The rooms were of the current vogue minimalist type with a glass screen between the bedroom and bathroom which we didn't like (why would anyone?) which meant that anyone using the bathroom at night floodlit the bedroom if they turned the bathroom light on as well as creating an interesting display of their own! The door into the bathroom was also excessively stiff and glass again (why?). The views from the rooms are of a central green area somewhat pretentiously named a Japanese garden but ok nevertheless. The bed was large and comfortable. Room service was good also.
As others have commented this is not a 5 stars hotel. How it got this rating I do not know but the terrace is huge and it may have originally been reserved for a fancy pool area which would be ideal given the location. The restaurant downstairs has a very good reputation locally but it is pricey so we didn't try it unfortunately.
In summary a decent 4 stars hotel of quirky design and with a compromised albeit peaceful and spectacular location. Overall very comfortable and the rates are reasonable for the standards on offer. If this was in the centre of town you could easily add another 30% as others seem to do already for little if anymore quality.
Loved Girona by the way.

“Absolutely Fabulous, You must stay here!”

Oh my goodness! I had no idea what a great hotel I booked for such a great rate! I paid the same amount at a Holiday Inn express in Madrid and this place was 10 times better! You walk into this Art-Deco Beauty of a hotel and the staff and is so nice, extremely unusual for Spain. They give you free access to the minibar in your room and in the lobby, absolutely unheard of in the States. The room was clean and BEAUTIFUL....it was like being in New York again. So trendy and to be honest with you my sister and I didn't even want to leave the hotel. We had a fabulous dinner in their restaurant downstairs, pricey but great great food. It was a short cab ride from where our bus with Ryan Air dropped us off, only 4 euros, not bad. The only thing was when we left to do our check out in the morning the cab driver tried to pull a fast one saying it was a holiday of some sort and charged us 8 euros to ride back, but not the hotels fault. They gave us a wake up call and a cab ready just like we asked them and didn't mess up the times like a lot of other hotels do. I WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO GIRONA JUST TO STAY HERE AGAIN! Ignore the other negative reviews, this hotel is soooooo nice and very relaxing, if you want to destress in style stay here.-Bee, Miami, Florida 1/2/08.
