“Beautifully peaceful”

Hotel Estela

Sep 13, 2005

Initially we had a great deal of difficulty finding this hotel as it is at the far end of Sitges at the port and not on the main strip as holiday brochures imply. However, the hotel itself is like staying in an art gallery - fantastic sculptures and paintings everywhere. This hotel is geared towards adults who want a peaceful holiday away from screaming children and the noise of the town. The hotel has 2 lovely small pools and is also right next to the beach. The hotel DOES NOT CASH EURO CHEQUES. This caused a big problem over the weekend. However, the big hotel nearby does. The only setback is that if you do want to go into the main town it's a long walk or you need to take a taxi. If you hire a car, the car parks are expensive. Barcelona is about 25 miles away, not 10 as one brochure told us. The train station is in main Sitges and the trains are really cheap. If you do use the roads, there is a toll booth on the new road just outside Sitges towards Barcelona which cost 4.47 Euros at the time of writing. We had a great holiday. Hope you do too.

“Best hotel in the world”

Hotel Estela

Having seen a few of the reviews on this site, I don't know what is going on. I am in no way affiliated with this hotel, but I have stayed there many times. My job used to involve travelling and staying in hotels, throughout the world, and I can say without a doubt, this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in (with the possibel exception of a hotel in Costa Rica). It is not expensive. The restaurant is exceptionally good value for money (compared with local restaurants). The rooms are fantastic. The hotle boasts an artist who has painted may of the rooms. The lobby is designed by Subirachs, who worked on the Sagrada Familia. You can get a room with a view of the beach and the port and the town. The staff are super friendly.

“Dali Would Have Loved It, But We Didn't”

Hotel Estela

The erotic sculptures on the breakfast tables and the weird floor to ceiling portrait of Linda Evans ( Linda Evans?!) in the lobby( complete with a sunflower for one eye) should have tipped us off that we'd entered an alternate universe-- one meant more for pretenders to Dali's throne than people like us seeking a comfortable hotel room with decent air conditioning and towels that didn't sand off the top two layers of your skin after you got out of the hot then suddenly freezing cold shower.

We had reserved a jr. suite, but after it became clear that the room was NOT boiling hot due to sun coming through the flimsy motel-like curtains, we switched to a room overlooking the harbor. The room was adequate, although for 200E a night you can do a lot better at other places in Sitges, unless you're desperately homesick for the Spanish room version of a downscale Ramada Inn.

“Great location, shame about the room”

It's nice to be near a fantastic marina (expensive boats!) and good eating places. There's a nice shallow beach right at your doorstep and you're near enough to Sitges to enjoy a good night out without having to suffer the noise! But, I wish they would do something about their rooms ... the floor felt icky when you walked on it with bare feet and there were strange stains on the sofa. The bathroom was badly put together and the shower went from very hot to cold. It was a pity, because we would have really like to stay again if they improved their rooms ... or perhaps it was just our room. It just seemed like a lot of money to pay (185 euros per night for the junior suite) for a room of that quality.

“Disappointing”

This hotel is not very welcoming to your average tourist - it is more concerned with 'professional' business - conferences and wedding parties.

You can't deny that the hotel is filled to the brim with interesting artwork (although the portrait of Linda Evans - Crystal Carrington in Dynasty - is a little wierd!). The rooms are OK, if a little dated - take your own hairdryer as the one in the bathroom is straight from the 1970s. There is a kitchenette, but no crockery or cutlery. We bought some plastic plates from the local supermarket.

Also, take beach towels with you as there are not any available at the poolside. The pool bar was not open and there is no information available, unless you ask.

The staff are OK - not welcoming - and you get the impression that, as tourists, you are an inconvenience to them not an essential part of their business.

The port area is lovely - restaurants are worth the extra money and the boats in the port are facinating!

It's a good 20 minute walk into the town centre, where there are plenty of clothes shops and bars and restaurants. It does get tackier the further on you go, but the promenade and beach front bars are nice.

We spent eight nights at the Estela after our 3 night trip to Barcelona. We ended our trip with 2 nights back in Barcelona and to be honest, we couldn't wait to get back there! We stayed in the same hotel in the city and the welcome we received when we got back, really helped to put the Estela in context. I don't think the staff at the Estela recognised you evey time you walked in as they don't even acknowledge you.

Sitges has grown so much in the last few decades that I think it's lost its typical Spanish feel - it is a nice place, but I think our hotel let our trip down.
