“Poor attitude of staff was a real disappointment...”

Husa Imperial Tarraco

Let's start with the positive things first - the room was generally clean and extremely spacious. The breakfast buffet is excellent - very varied and they even had soya milk on offer in addition to normal dairy milk which was pleasing to see!

That's about where my praise for this establishment ends I'm afraid. I can't recommend this hotel due to the outrageously poor and flippant attitude of their staff. When we got to our room, the safe wasn't working (the last person who used it had locked it) so I called reception. They said someone would come to sort the problem out, but nobody turned up. I got annoyed and called again. This time I was put through to someone else who told me that they couldn't do anything about it and I'd have to wait until the morning! When I went down to reception in person, I was told that only an "expert" could fix the problem, and he wasn't around. They didn't seem at all apologetic about the situation.

In general, the service was quite unfriendly, and everything seemed like a bit of an effort for the staff.

The pool was unavailable when we wanted to use it (at 10 in the morning), which was a bit disappointing. Also, the rooms, whilst clean, are very dated now and could do with some upgrading.

The location's great though - especially ideal if you'd like to visit Portaventura, as Tarragona train station is just 5 minutes walk away, and it's only around 15 minutes to the park. Also, the hotel is close to the roman ruins, including the Amphitheatre.

We stayed in this hotel for 6 days. It has good points, and not so good points.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk, uphill and up lots of steps, from the train station. A taxi will cost about 7 Euro's, but it's worth it if you have heavy luggage. If you want to avoid the steps you have to go a different route that makes it around 20 minutes walk rather than 10. Probably best avoided when it's 30 degrees and the sun is blazing.

On arriving at the hotel you go past the car park. The car park is worth mentioning simply because it has the worst design of any we have ever encountered. The car park is oddly shaped so every space is a different size and at a slightly different angle to the space next to it. We actually had quite a lot of fun sitting on our balcony watching people trying to park in it, and the staff trying to direct them into spaces. It's also good fun to watch the feral cats and kittens that seem to live in the hotel grounds.

The entrance to the hotel is nice, and adjoins the Tarragona Casino. Grand piano's are very much in evidence. Previous TripAdvisor reviews were not very favourable towards the reception staff. We would be inclined to agree. While they weren't unhelpful, they did not make much effort to actually help, didn't volunteer information, and smiling was obviously not their thing. Strangely, we found the restaurant staff smiling, friendly, and helpful.

The location is great. We had a room facing East overlooking the Roman Forum and across the Mediterranean. The balcony was an okay size with a table and 2 chairs. The balconies on this side of the hotel get the sun from dawn until 1pm. You can then go downstairs to the swimming pool on the West side of the hotel and get the sun for the rest of the day. Tarragona is a port but if you have a room on the East side you would never know it as you can't see it at all. It is also only 100m from the start of the 'old town' where most Tarragona sights are, and 100m from the start main shopping streets.

The decor in the room we had was at least 20 years, and probably closer to 30 years, out of date. The quality of the fixtures and fittings was good and it was probably very flash when it was first done. Saying that, they have an ongoing refurbishment programme and the new rooms do look good.

We weren't happy with the attention to detail when the rooms were cleaned. For example, our balcony was never cleaned, hard to reach bits of the bathroom floor were never cleaned, and the beds weren't always made up properly (eg. sheets not tucked in). It wasn't anything that would stop us going back there but it's not what we would have expected from a 4* hotel.

Overall, it is a good hotel but they need to tighten up on a few aspects to be truly 4*.

“Reasonable hotel with Fantastic views”

Have just returned from a 3 night stay at this Hotel. We paid 70 euros for a twin room although we requested a double.

At that price it is a bargain, however I do doubt the 4 star rating!
Tarragona is a lovely place and in the main very reasonably priced, we live in Barcelona and noticed how much cheaper it is.

The hotel is ok, clean, with a great central location, the pool is small but was clean however there was building work going on at the back and the constant noise was not to pleasant.

We didn't use the bar or the restaurant so can't comment. The staff seemed friendly and they let us leave our bag at reception without a problem until our train left late afternoon.

In front of the Hotel is a little train that gives you a tour of the port and city for 5 euros it is a good way to get your bearings.

“Ok-hotel staff a little rude”

We arrived a little before check in and asked (in very broken catalan!!!) if we could check in early, the man dealing with us was very rude and responded curtly with No come back in 4 hours then walked off.
we had cases so stayed around the hotel-another member of staff came up to us after 2 hours asked if we had a reservation, we said yes and he said a room was available for us with no fuss at all.
the duration of the stay was fine and we were lucky enough to be in tarragona during the fire work festival which was lovely.
On checking out we asked if we could pay extra to stay in our room until the evening the lady serving us said this should be ok as there were no bookings for the room, so as she was making the arrangements the same guy who refused to allow us to check in early went up to the receptionist spoke to her in catalan in a very gruff manor, she came back over to us and said she couldnt extend our stay.
i found the whole dealings very unprofessional and quite rude
