We stayed at the Mercenate Palace from 25 February to March 3 2005.
This was our third time there. I reserved a superior room on Golden Tulip's website at a rate of 164 Euros/night including breakfast. The superior rooms face the St. Maria Maggorie church. These are much larger than the standard room we had in the past.
The hotel is four blocks south of the Termini train station and is one block from the Vittorio metro station. This is an advantage if you arrive at the Termini station and discover the taxis are on strike as we did in 1998. Most of the popular historical/religious sites in Rome can be reached by metro or bus from the Termini station.
The comment about the food running out at breakfast happens in hotels in Europe that have a bus load of tourists there. 30 people showing up at 7 AM can wipe out the food temporarily. I have seen this in Heidelberg, Rome, and Milan.
The hotel offers the airport limo service to everyone who makes a reservation there. If cost is no object take it, otherwise use the direct train service from the Termini station. The front desk people are quite helpful and it always pays to be polite and try to speak some Italian to them.
