I could not let any more time pass without sharing some notes on our trip to Venice. We visited as part of a two-week guided tour of Italy; we had dozens of unforgettable experiences during this trip, with Venice being right up there as our favorite city to have visited. If you've never been to Italy before, please consider Venice as a mandatory stop for its unique character. Bring a camera and be prepared to melt down some batteries and memory cards -- the city is a perpetual Kodak moment.
I traveled with my wife, and our style of travel is pretty active -- we like to walk a lot and get into areas not usually frequented by tourists -- we do not like crowds and will go to great lengths to avoid them! We also will skip conventional tourist things for the sake of time and money; therefore we eschewed the gondola rides to be able to visit more churches and see the local neighborhoods.
We entered the city by private water-taxi, a wood-paneled craft that seated about a dozen--we cruised down the Grand Canal at sunset and it was one of the highlights of my life. We nearly wept at the beauty of it all! If you are crafty, make sure you snag the open rear seats of the boat and prepare for the best photos of your life --
During the afternoon, when the crowds descended on St. Mark's square, we were deep into the city having a slice of eggplant pizza and some gelato for much less than the prices in the main areas. If you are able to move quickly, I advise getting away from the crowds for cheaper eats and local flavor.

A note on churches -- we saw much beauty within these places for free. There were a few exceptions, but most do not allow photos, revealing clothing, etc. This is covered by most guides I read of Italy, but there still appeared to be a lot of people ignoring their wishes. They were all soliciting donations, and a lot were in the midst of preservation/restoration of their interiors. I often felt the need to make a donation/buy a postcard to preserve these churches, many of which looked to be hurting financially.

We stayed in a Novotel outside of the city (this was a great pick BTW), next time we visit we may splurge and stay within Venice for the King's ransom it will cost for a night, perhaps.
One negative that we ran across was the outright nastiness of the water quality--a little off-putting.
We had dinner arranged by the travel company in Venice -- it was just fine, and our table was at the termination of one of the canals. Watch your wine intake at night because there is a lot of water to tumble into!
Quick tips: Doge's Palace well worth it, take the elevator to the top of the tower for a splendid view, enjoy the free entertainment in St. Mark's Square in the evening, leave the gondola-riding to Madonna and oh, mind the pidgeons and the pickpockets!
