The Black Tulip has its own website with detailed photographs of each room, so you know what your supposed to be getting before you book.
Its very central and a good location to get around the city.
Being a gay traveller going to Amsterdam for the first time, I was looking forward to this trip. I think the whole plannet must know of the ways of the city with drugs, sex and canels. We checked in to firstly be given a mini lecture on the vices of Amsterdams drugs, and stories of people throwing themselves in to the canel and dying. Nice to hear after a long car drive when all you want to do is shower and relax. You then have to sign a disclaimer to use the room, hang on I booked a non-bondage room?
Now after all that, still tired, now a bit hacked off you get to the room. Looks ok..... settle in then notice actually the maintenance of the room is shabby.
The TV was held on the wall bracket by Duck Tape and cotton cord. The extractor fan in the window did not work, so there was no ventilation, coffee stains were on the hifi, the dado rail was hanging off, the paint in the bathroom was flaking off the walls, the tiles were cracked, the thermostat was loose, the shower didn't drain very well, couple of light bulbs didn't work, every floor board creaked, half the room had been touched up in silk paint over matt, and there was an odd picture hung on the wall half over the door frame covering up damage to the wall.
Finally there is a ladder on the wall leading to a big metal cage on top of the bathroom, not mentioned on the website.
Breakfast is one of those quiet affars where all the guests have just the one table, it was reasonable but you could not escape from particularly annoying people and eat by yourself if you wanted to.
Overall I've stayed in worse, but I didn't enjoy the stay and if I return to Amsterdam (since the lecture even put me off stepping out of the room), I'll choose another hotel.
