“Nice hotel but expected more from a 5*”

Stanhope Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Lancashire, UK
Mar 4, 2008

I recently stayed at the Stanhope for one night on a business trip. The hotel's lobby and general decor is very nice. The staff at check-in were helpful. An additional person came over to service me as other staff were busy. On check-out again, they were swift and professional. My positive view is somewhat dampened by the size of the room which was small for a 5* (and the price I was paying) though the bathroom was a nice size (no bath though!). The room service was timely but the food really disappointing.

Another disappointment was that the library bar, though very attractive looking, had not a single book in Engish on the shelves. For a hotel that prides itself on an English style I found this odd.

I wouldn't mind staying here again, but if you are spending the money then the Radisson SAS Royal is a lot better IMO.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the positive comments you did on our service level. We always want to keep close contact with our guests.

Some of our rooms are small because we want to keep an English cosy style with a lot of antiques. Our deluxe rooms and suites are larger than the standards .

Our library bar is in fact a former pharmacy furniture which is filled for a part with decoration books and one shelve is plenty of English magazines.

We are still working on our room service and suggest you to try our gastronomic restaurant as we have not reached the 5* level on this side.

Looking forward to welcome you back to the Stanhope Hotel, we remain,

Yours sincerely,

The Stanhope Management Team

“One of the best”

Stanhope Hotel

Feb 20, 2008

Booked a Eurostar week-end (Fri/Sat nights) through lastminute.com. Wonderful experience, the hotel was beautifully kept just as the website photos show. Fantastic room - we paid a bit extra for a de-luxe room which gave us a separate living room. Amazing bathroom - his and hers basins, not to mention a shower and separate bath and shower! Very friendly and helpful service. Breakfast was not included in the package but they had a special deal for 17.50 Euros - as much as you could eat buffet. Absolutely no complaints.

“Birthday”

Stanhope Hotel

Jan 31, 2008

I booked a Birthday Package through the hotel website, which included an upgrade, breakfast, champagne in the room and a small gift from the hotel, for € 139,--.
The room was lovely; comfy couch, 2 tv's (reception was so-so), seperate toilet, real roomy bathroom (2 showers!) and a good sturdy bed.
Service: in a bilingual country like Belgium (particularly the European capital!) it is strange that the front desk staff did not speak Dutch. Mailcorrespondence, however, was in fluent Dutch....
The gift I was supposed to get was given on our leaving. Not very thoughtful, I thought.
Breakfast wasn't as abundant as I would have hoped and expected in a hotel of this standing. But quality was good.
All in all, a very pleasant stay in a hotel that is not quite worthy of its 5 stars... But at the price I paid it was definitely worth every penny!

“Gorgeous, if a bit 'stuffy'”

Stanhope Hotel

Jan 27, 2008

The Stanhope hotel is a gorgeous hotel, well worth the 5* rating. It can be a little confusing when you arrive as you need to walk through a wide hallway and find your way to reception without the help of signs, not what you need after the maddening experience of the train station if you arrive by Eurostar.

The reception staff are pleasant and helpful but not overly nice, will, however, do all they can to help you. The outside garden is particulary nice in Summer, lovely to have breakfast outside, however, as in most 5* places the food and drink is on the pricey side for standard food.

The location is great, it's a 5 min walk to the park and palace and about a 15 minute to the Grand Place and tourist centre. It is in a safe area and we felt perfectly safe walking home at 2am!

We would stay again but on the knowledge that as it is near the business district there are lots of 'suits' in the hotel, we felt a little wierd in our 'holiday gear', my boyfriend more than me as his casual choice is Rugby shirts and shorts!

Anyway, lovely place would stay there again.

“Lovely Building Poorly Run”

Stanhope Hotel

Jan 9, 2008
0/1 found this review helpful

Excellent bedrooms and suites which can be good value for money at weekends and on balance enough to justify a return visit if you want to be in that part of Brussels. The public areas are pleasant too. The big weakness lies in the service. A sub-standard buffet breakfast is often poorly stocked and staff are reluctant to meet even simple special requests.

On one occasion when entertaining in the courtyard bar with only two other customers present ,the barman took 2 reminders to come and take orders and a further half hour to deliver a round of drinks.

But the very worst aspect is 24 hour room service - don't order it if you value your health (and wallet). On one occasion we got a pizza still frozen in the middle and on another a bowl of cold thin greyish liquid that might have been vegetable soup.

Like many Brussels hotels internet charges are at rip-off rate.
