While at breakfast on the morning of our departure, I thought of writing a review on my return and wondered what I'd put in the 'cons' section. After some thought, I decided the worst I could think of was "No jacket hook in the downstairs men's toilet". So I think that's fairly close to 'faultless'.
We stayed at this hotel on a Saturday night in early December 2007. Being my first trip to Brussels, I thought we were 'some distance' outside the centre - I found when I arrived that the location is actually on a minor street lined with trendy restaurants, and probably as close as you can get to the centre (5 minutes' walk!) without being in the slightly cheesy (or rather, chocolatey) tourist zone. The hotel consists of the floors above a small restaurant (our floor had two rooms), and is well laid out, with a small reception downstairs, a lift and staircase - all tastefully decorated in white, with floor lighting and original art, and wood paneling and stained glass in the restaurant from the original building.
We had room 403, which looked out over the street at the front. The room itself was very spacious, again in whites with a large print on the wall over the bed; solid wood flooring, and a frosted glass bathroom suite opening out to the bedroom from a slighty raised platform (see the Expedia photos). The toiletries were Bvlgari, the taps and fittings so neat and precise I felt I could set the shower temperature to a fraction of a degree; the shower itself one of the best I've used in a hotel. The stylish bathrobes in the wardrobe matched the towels and the bedding on the king-size bed, which were cream with brown trim. The white flat-screen TV on the table in front of the bed came with a digital TV receiver, receiving around 90 channels, including non-internationals like BBC1 and 2. The windows opened fully out over the street, and we did hear occasional horn blasts from outside, although not to the point where I felt I'd teleported to New York or Rome.
The breakfast was in keeping with the rest of the hotel - a buffet with fine quality coffee and croissants (the only things I tried). Even the key system, I liked: a contactless card that you wave in front of a concealed panel on the front door, or in front of the room number outside your room, and then slip into your wallet. I didn't try the WiFi - it could be that it didn't reach our floor - but I picked up another hotspot from outside.
Overall, the hotel is a delight, and we came away feeling more refreshed and relaxed than we have in from many others. The prices probably reflect this if not enjoying the heavily discounted weekend rates; we could also have stayed in the Marriott for a moderately lower price, but wouldn't have enjoyed it anywhere near as much. The decor, the art, the atmosphere, make it very pleasant for a single business traveller, ideal for a young couple going for a weekend away, and I would definitely recommend it.
