After a three night stay in Bertrams Guldsmeden we don’t understand its official four star classification and its rating as Trip Advisor’s # 2 in Copenhagen.
Our ‘superior deluxe’ room was accessed via a tiny jerky elevator and two flights of stairs. The bed was comfortable but the room was small, with inadequate storage, poor lighting and warped drawers. The balcony of the adjacent room looked into our window at about 2 m distance. The bathroom was tiny, with miniaturised equipment and a handheld shower that required acrobatic skills. The view was industrial.
The Danish-style buffet breakfast was good, especially the fresh orange juice and the bread from the next door bakery, but it had to be eaten off a small sloping table in a congested room.
The hotel is in a somewhat run down area of Vesterbro, about 1.5 km W of the train station and Tivoli. There’s a frequent bus service to the city centre and a stop outside the hotel.
The staff were pleasant and helpful. The property has a quirky Danish identity and a loyal clientele. But it fell well below our expectations and we thought it poor value at €235 per night (plus a surcharge to use a 'foreign' credit card!).
Tip - for a great value gourmet lunch with a waterside view, try the elegant restaurant in the spectacular new Skuespilhuset, at the harbour end of Nyhavn.
