Trip Advisor needs to institute 1/2 star ratings. This hotel was above a 4, but not quite a 5. We stayed here during a recent 2 day trip to Salzburg. While the hotel is not in the "old town", it is within walking distance and it was actually nice to stay in a "real" neighborhood, rather than in the overly-cute tourist zone. The hotel offers all the amenities of a solid American chain. Our bedroom was huge (king-sized bed), spotless and comfortable, and the bathroom was larger than the usual European lot. What really stood out though, was the exceptional service we received from the front desk staff. Not only were they extremely pleasant, but they were very knowledgeable in the area and were ready at all times to offer any help which we required.
Salzburg may be livelier in the Summer when the city is flooded with tourists, but we found it absolutely dead after 8 p.m. The Crowne Plaza offers 24 hour room service, a big plus in a town that shuts down after a certain hour and best, it's right across the street (catty corner) to the one restaurant that was open until 3 a.m.!!! We arrived in town almost at midnight and were happy to find this very local place (definitely not a tourist restaurant)...and the food was excellent!
The only reason why this hotel earned a 4.5 rather than a 5 was because of the tv situation. There were plenty of channels, but most were in German. We noticed very few German speaking guests at the hotel and the 3 or 4 English channels--(two of which were CNN and BBC) were basically news and not much else. As we speak Spanish fluently, we ended up watching Italian television which was easy to understand. However, in a town that has extremely limited nightlife, tv selection is very important and unfortunately, this is the one area of the Pitter with which I was not satisfied.
Otherwise, I would return to the Pitter with no hesitation and the hotel is highly recommended for a stay in Salzburg.
