My partner and I spent a week at Le Meridien Wien during the Christmas season. It was a great hotel for the following reasons:
1. The location can't be beat if you're focused on spending most of your time in the center of the city (Innere Stadt) or the surrounding neighborhoods. It is minutes from the Symphony, Opera, City Hall, Hapsburg Palace, Museum Quarter, Kartner Strasse and Stephans Dom. And it is only one block from the Karlsplatz subway station, which can give you rapid access to other neighborhoods and the airport.
2. The staff, particularly the Concierge, were tremendously helpful. We contacted them a few days in advance of our arrival, and, even on this short notice, they were able to get us terrific seats for everything we wanted to see: the Symphony and the Vienna Boys' Choir, in particular. This helped make the trip, as these cultural events are critical to understanding Vienna. And, given all of these events were sold out when we contacted them ourselves, it was impressive that the Concierge had the contacts to get us the tickets.
3. The room was great. We were in a standard Double (Deluxe is what they called it). The bed was very comfortable, with down comforters and pillows. The temperature control was easy to use and effective. There was a beautiful flat screen TV with cable, some of which was in English for those of you who don't speak German. There was a "free" Mini Bar (who has ever heard of that?) that was restocked daily. (I think we paid $15 more per day for this, so make sure you have paid the right rate before you partake). And, best of all, the shower was awesome! It had multiple heads and felt great. The decor was very modern, which isn't our typical taste, but we enjoyed it nonetheless. The only issue was that there wasn't a ton of storage space, so you might have to keep some items in your suitcase...but not a huge deal.
4. The breakfast couldn't be beat. It was expensive (26 Euros a head), but worth it. It is an all-you-can-eat buffet style service (drinks included), and has anything you could want...even for a non-European palate. We ate there almost every day, and didn't feel the need to eat lunch most days given the amount of food we ate at breakfast...so it was worth the price. Some of the rates they offer include breakfast; we'd recommend taking the rate with breakfast, as you'll get a discount to the full 26 Euro price...and there is no better place for breakfast in the neighborhood.
5. The gym was also really great. I think it is actually part of a high-end chain of gyms in Austria, so I believe locals can work out there, too. It has all the latest cardio equipment. It had some weights, although not as many as you'd be used to at home (but far more than you typically get at a hotel). And the pool could actually be used for lap swimming.
The only thing we didn't enjoy was the club-like atmosphere in the lobby at night. The breakfast area transforms into a smoke-filled nightclub, which is loud and smelly. But you can't hear it from your room, so it wasn't a huge problem...only an issue if you have to traverse the lobby.
All in all, this is a terrific hotel. We would highly recommend it.
By the way, we got a great rate via Orbitz. Our room should have gone for over 250 Euros per night. We got it for 160 Euros via Orbitz. But, even at 250 Euros, it would be worth it.
