LP is a stunning Palladian mansion surrounded by its own 500 acres of parkland and walled gardens. Quite tricky to find (especially with sat nav which takes you down some hairy farmtracks - beware! It's actually not far off the A 4 so follow a map. The hotel itself is approached down a very impressive mile-long drive lined by beech and lime trees.
Welcoming fires crackle in reception, as attentive staff sort out your room and relieve you of your car and baggage.
Run by the peerless Harry Murray (recently awarded the MBE for his services to the hotel industry) nothing is too much trouble and Harry creates a warm and relaxed atmosphere in which, even in these gracious surroundings, you can walk in in muddy wellies or tee shirt and shorts, or a towelling dressing gown, and nobody bats an eyelid. The Murray's want to make you feel at home, and you do, as soon as you arrive.
The rooms are sumptuous iand furnished with antiques, while the beds are so comfortable that after we stayed last time we actually came home and ordered a new bed. The only other hotel bed that came close to this was at the Lygon Arms in Broadway. You spend several thousands on a mattress, and I notice! Especially appreciated if you take the chance to ride in the hotel's unique equestrian centre which is right next door, with its own cross country course, or, if you prefer, you borrow their mountain bikes and explore the countryside that way. If you love horses, you are surrounded by them.
The food is exceptional and award-winning and the service, as in every other part of the hotel, faultless. Breakfasts are generous and leisurely while the meals in the spa are excellent value for money, and you can eat in your lovely soft bath-robe.
The bar has comfy sofas by the fire, and there is a lovely library overlooking the croquet lawn. Friendly atmosphere and the guests all talk to each other. My only complaint is last time we stayed here, someone was puffing on a cigar after breakfast (yuk) and filled the library with the choking stench of his tobacco so we were obliged to sit outside (OK so that was hardly a beef in July) But cigar smokers please be aware how pungent your habit is. But that's not the fault of the hotel or its staff.
If you're in to spas, the beauty salon, is in a separate house in the grounds, and offers a wide range of relaxing or invigorating treatments. (see below)
It is expensive, but there are always deals and many go here for honeymoons or anniversaries, one lucky woman we met actually lives here in the week to be near her job in Bath (six miles away) and only goes hoem at weekends.
A Relais & Chateaux Hotel. N.B. The Lucknam Park Spa will be closed from 3 January to 22 January 2006 inclusive.
