From check-in to check-out the Matelote excelled. Easy to find and with pre booked parking we were in our room within minutes. The check-in clerk was professionalism personified and he arranged for a colleague to open up the garage and escort us back to our room.
The room overlooked the main road outside NAUSICAÄ, Sea Experience Centre but we did not experience any traffic noise. The room itself was what you would expect of a 4 star hotel but with nothing to distinguish itself from our larger chain hotels. It was clean, airy and the bathroom was modern and efficient.
We were not disappointed either with the 1 star Michelin restaurant which lived up to its reputation. Excellent welcome and service, attentive but not intrusive and as you would expect in Boulogne, sea food was the order of the day and it was superb accompanied by an expansive wine list – sadly only one bottle was consumed.
This hotel was the staring point for our journey through France to Provence and like the start of the Tour de France it set us on a journey with a warm ‘welcome back to France’ feeling.
It’s expensive but when its quality you do not feel cheated like you can at some other hotels.
With most website blurb you are sometimes left wanting the experience it promised but the hotel kept its promise and we will certainly be calling back at the Matelote for many years to come.
