“Excellent - can't wait to return”

Hotel de La Matelote

5 of 5 stars
Cardiff
Jul 5, 2008

From check-in to check-out the Matelote excelled. Easy to find and with pre booked parking we were in our room within minutes. The check-in clerk was professionalism personified and he arranged for a colleague to open up the garage and escort us back to our room.

The room overlooked the main road outside NAUSICAÄ, Sea Experience Centre but we did not experience any traffic noise. The room itself was what you would expect of a 4 star hotel but with nothing to distinguish itself from our larger chain hotels. It was clean, airy and the bathroom was modern and efficient.

We were not disappointed either with the 1 star Michelin restaurant which lived up to its reputation. Excellent welcome and service, attentive but not intrusive and as you would expect in Boulogne, sea food was the order of the day and it was superb accompanied by an expansive wine list – sadly only one bottle was consumed.

This hotel was the staring point for our journey through France to Provence and like the start of the Tour de France it set us on a journey with a warm ‘welcome back to France’ feeling.

It’s expensive but when its quality you do not feel cheated like you can at some other hotels.
With most website blurb you are sometimes left wanting the experience it promised but the hotel kept its promise and we will certainly be calling back at the Matelote for many years to come.

“Very pleasant hotel”

We stayed at La Matelote for two nights last weekend. Boulogne was not the most appealing city I have ever stayed in so we needed the hotel to be good. It was very nice and comfortable.

Lovely bar, very relaxing, rooms had big beds, bathroom great showers. UK TV channels for those who like that sort of thing. If I was going to Boulogne again, would definitely stay here.

We had a meal in the restaurant which met all expectations and reviews, it was delicious beautifully presented food, not cheap but still great value for money when compared to similar London restaurants.

Staff in the restaurant were not the warmest, two of our party had allergy/dietary requirements and this did make us feel at one stage a little as though we were being difficult., when it's just one of those things!

“Lovely Hotel - no complaints”

We stayed only one night. Our room overlooked the sea and had a balcony. It cost 120 euro. We took full advantage of the two different types of sauna, the pool and the jacuzzi, all located in a small but well-designed and restful little place. The room was excellent, the bed comfortable, and the staff very helpful (though they might have shown us how to work the heat, which took some doing). A couple of tips - the town is shut on a Monday and our meals at the Brasserie in the Nausicaa across the road were uneven - one good and one only mediocre. This is the only option on site on a Sunday, as the main restaurant is closed. However, we very much enjoyed our second stay here (the first was eight years ago when it first opened.)

“Good Hotel”

Boulognes only 4 star Hotel. Situated on the sea front opposite Nausicaa. We hada suite - very comfy, spacious and with all mod cons - sea view. Bed was v comfy.
Newly opened pool and fitness suite/sauna were nice although pool is small.
The restaurant was closed for christmas - weve eaten there before and it is superb - michelin star so the hotel directed us to the restaurant in nausicaa which they also run - it was very very good. Not as upmarket as the matelote restaurant but worth a visit.

A great place to stay

Hotel de La Matelote

Lovely views from room, although it was rather small. comfortable bed though heating clicked off and on frequently and there is a fair amount of traffic noise.
good bathroom with lots of soap and other goodies!
Fantastic breakfast at euro 13.
Excellent small pool and jacussi though get door code from reception before entering.
As always had an excellent meal at their restaurant, excellent value for food but wine prices are out of this world!
Would definately go again.
