“Excellent hotel for families too”

I had a great deal of difficulty actually making a booking at the Hotel de la Matelote due to problems with their computer but I was glad I persisted with the reservation even though several emails went unanswered. My husband, two children and I had an excellent overnight stay en route from Calais and would not hesitate to return. We booked a family room which adequately accommodated us all with spacious bathroom (separate shower cubicle and overhead shower) and the TV had several UK channels including BBC1, Channel 4 and ITV. Internet access was available in the room.

The breakfast buffet suited us all with fresh fruit salad and natural yogurt available as well as a good variety of cereals, boiled and scrambled eggs, bread, croissants etc. The hotel also has a very nice bar.

The Matelote is located opposite the NAUSICAA and within easy walking distance of a selection of bars and restaurants.

“Great Little Find”

Stayed here for two nights as a gateway destination for a drive to the south of France. Hotel was very easy to find after leaving the ferry and has it's own small, secure car park (fee, book in advance). We were greeted by William, the charming porter/jack of all trades, who spoke excellent English and couldn't do enough to be helpful, without being obsequious. The rooms were small-ish but had all of the amenities that you would hope to find, plus a few extra. My heart sank when I saw that mine was on the ground floor, next to the elevator, but it was quiet, as were the other guests. The restaurant is considered the best in town so wasn't inexpensive, but the set menu was very good value for money and they bring fresh cotton candy as part of the sweet course! Breakfast was a perfectly reasonable buffet with hot dishes available. The town itself warrants more than just a passing glance, with several interesting shops and restaurants. La Matelote (translation: the fisherman's wife) is excellent value for money and a great little find. And the Dover/Boulogne ferry was very good.

Clean, comfortable, friendly helpful staff. delicious breakfast and superb fish restaurant (michelin star)
good bathroom with sensible 'bits'
On a busy road facing the sea but well insulated. Dont bother with a balcony - more of a window box!

“We even had candyfloss.”

We used LaMatelote as a focal point to meet a group of 10 friends. 4 of us stayed in this comfortable and well appointed hotel. The rooms were ideal and quiet. Breakfast was one of the best "continental style", with plenty of variety, experienced in France.
The main restaurant is an absolute joy - attentive service;comfortable seats to while away 3 hours of gourmet eating. The 35Euro menu was most adequate - 5 courses. Great selection of wines but we settled on a very fresh Sancerre. La Matelote is renowned for its little extras between courses - and to top it all - candyfloss. Overall a great value stay - even the eclipse of the moon was overshadowed by this experience.
This is a small hotel with a big heart - warm and accommodating. Even the car was garaged - for a small fee. We have agreed to return.

“Excellent Hotel and Restaurant”

I don't usually bother to write recommendations in internet forums but I was so surprised at some of the comments here that I thought I should set the record straight .We have been going to the Matelote for the last 7 years, as it is a perfect stop off en route to England from Germany and vice versa.. The hotel rooms are cosy, modern and clean, and the staff very friendly. We always reserve a table in the Restaurant where we have found the staff attentive and helpful. Three hours for a meal someone complains....yes we are on the continent (even our dogs are welcome, when we dine there)! Too much sauce? (No need to comment really). Perhaps some of those so quick to criticise think a good night out is an evening in the Oxo tower! If so then perhaps it isn't such a bad thing that they will be steering clear of the Matelote and going to the Nauticaa (are you serious?) in future. Oh, I almost forgot... mussels and chips can be had in most of the seafront restaurants near the hotel, (you can be in-and out in under half an hour) and at less than half the price you pay in London! If on the other hand, you are someone looking forward to a relaxing evening with good food, wine and attentive service make sure you book a table in La Matelote!!
