“The lovely snow and rock”

Hotel Chalet Neige et Roc

4 of 5 stars
Westcliff on Sea Essex
Feb 27, 2008

We decided to stay at a hotel this year instead of self catering for our annual skiing holiday, and having chosen this lovely little hotel, I felt compelled to write a review. Samoens is a lovely traditional village and is not too "winter sport" orientated, Neige et Roc is situated just outside the centre. The hotel is small but has good facilities, and whilst being a little tired in places, is quite obviously being renovated an area at a time and is in the main very nice. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and dealt with all our requests efficiently. They made our holiday. The food was excellent and varied and was a welcome change from the Savoiard diet of meat, cheese and potatoes found in most resteraunts. I would recommend this to anyone or any family looking for somewhere to stay for a skiing holiday.

“OK but......”

Hotel Chalet Neige et Roc

Stayed for 4 nights half board. Pleasant foyer and spa area. Rooms clean and food reasonable. Would suggest avoiding fondue night unless you are fond of loud and banal music. Owners pleasant but not the most informed about such essentials as the detailed working of the ski bus service. Would definitely stay in Samoens again though not sure about Neige et Roc- I think they need more competition.

We stayed in the self catering apartments at the hotel with our children aged 5 and 10 years. Our room (no 56) was south facing and had sunshine all day. Excellent views of the mountains from the balcony. Room was clean and well appointed except for the kitchen which only had two hot plates and a microwave to cook with.
The hotel is in a good location situated only five minutes walk from the centre of this small town. The free bus to the ski lift stops outside every fifteen minutes, alternatively it is a pleasant fifteen minute walk.
The bar, reception, and restaurant areas of the hotel are cosy. The owners were very friendly and there were nice touches such as free fresh pastries at reception every day. The indoor pool and changing area was very clean.
Samoens is a small town with a good selection of reasonably priced shops and restaurants( a main course, dessert and drinks for four was about fifty euros). There is an ice rink and a new leisure centre has nearly been completed.
The gondola ski lift is only about four years old. It is a ten minute ride to the top and you alight at the beginners slopes. All facilities here also seemed new.
We visited a week before UK school half term and the resort was very quiet. Taxi transfer time by taxi from Geneva was 80 minutes.

“lovely village”

Decided to go away for xmas for the first time and it couldn't be anywhere but the white stuff for christmas! Needed a place which would cater for a single traveller/non skiing grandparents and a family with a 4 and 7 yr old to have childcare and lessons and of course a reasonable area for us skiers.
After much research settled on Samoens as I had read about it for years as being a lovely village to stay with access to skiing in flaine. The Niege et Roc was found and checked with this site and was also on another ski companies books (the pictures wowed the in laws and it was settled )
Booked flights with easyjet from Bmth - Gen eva (finally found our way out of the french side) to hire the cars. (Go up one level from the arrival hall straight to the far right corner and through the security doors).
Geneva gorgeous at night with all the lights. If you want to avoid the swiss tax take the road to Ambilly through Geneva. Took about 1 half hrs to get to Samoens - neige et roc is on the road to verchaix.
The hotel is lovely - very alpine with lots of wood and low ceilings, rooms were immaculate and the staff very friendly. Cosy fire in the bar and wonderful 5 course meals. For xmas we paid about 770euros for a weeks half board. There was a xmas market in the streets of the village (about 5 mins level walk) with all the fairy lights and music it really created a wonderful atmosphere. No snow in the village unfortunately and also pretty sparse up at 1600. There were a few runs open for beginners and over at morillon esserts they had a couple of runs with artificial snow.
If you need a nursery or ski school for a 7 yrs old then the 'village des enfants' at Morillon esserts is the closest place to get to. Took about 10 mins to get up the mountain to drop them off for the lessons.
We had to drive to the highest resort Flaine to do our skiing (if you need to do this purchase your day ski pass at Morillon for Flaine ) the queues were so slow!!! Also did a day in Avoriaz - very busy and the queuing was awful. When are they going to get some automation up there!!
We have not been put off going away but may wait until new year next time and definitely a glacier /higher resort.

Stayed at Neige et Roc for 3 nights before going onto our main holiday in Argentiere and would have liked to stay longer! The food was absolutely superb, the pool and spa very relaxing and Oliver and Francoise the owners were really charming and helpful people. The hortel was suggested by Peak Retreats our tour operator who told us it was one of the best hotels they featured in the area. We have already decided to book again for next year but for a whole week this time. If you want a good instructor ask for Pascal D at the ESF.
