My husband and I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the hotel, following TripAdvisor glowing reviews. We were very disappointed. The"luxury "room in the guesthouse bore no resemblance to any of those featured on the hotel's website. It was very dark and shabby, with virtually no furniture,a hard thin carpet, and thoroughly depressing. The common parts of the guesthouse were the same, and in desperate need of refurbishment. We were shown 4 other rooms, both in the main hotel (these were very small)and the guesthouse until we finally got one that was pleasant with characterful furnishings, and even a small patio garden.Even so,it was still not luxury standard. The towels were few, hard and extremely small. The extractor fan in the bathroom was broken, and so loud that you could not switch the bathroom lights on without causing disturbance. The location could be lovely but the building works referred to in previous reviews are still going on: the guesthouse immediately adjacent to the hotel is covered in scaffolding and there is dirt and dust right by the patio of the hotel,so the picturesque scene is ruined and you would not want to sit outside.I was assured when I booked that the building work had finished. In fact what the hotel meant was there is no actual construction work at the weekend.Nevertheless the ugly building site is still there, and during the week the noise and dust must be horrible.Such is the extent of the work that I cannot imagine the building being complete before 2008.
The staff were efficient but not at all apologetic about the rooms, their variance from what they feature on their website, and the state of the building.I was told that the room we finally got was a big upgrade. In fact I was paying E115 for a room with a E120 list price.Hardly a huge discount .There was a meanness about everything, from charging E2.5 for a tiny 1/4l bottle of water in the room,to adding 90 cents to an E390 bill for a postage stamp. Basically this is not a luxury hotel and is not worth E115 a night.
The food was fine,we ate the full evening dinner but very expensive compared to other meals we had in Bamberg, and again the restaurant decor is dated. The bar is a small area by reception,so not really somewhere you want to linger.
We visited a friend staying at the 4 star Welcome Hotel Residenzschloss, who for E90 had ,in the old part of the hotel,a lovely large light airy room and bathroom, towels and fluffy bathrobe, free daily fresh fruit platter, a champagne buffet breakfast and a free health spa treatment. If we had stayed any longer we would have switched hotels just to be in a more light pleasant and luxurious environment.
Finally,I should add Bamberg is well worth a visit, perfect for a long weekend so do go .
