“A great wee place”

O Donnabhain's Guesthouse

Aug 24, 2007

My husband and I stayed at O Donnabhain's Inn for the last few days of a trip around Ireland. When we first arrvived, there was a mix up with the booking and they didn't have us booked in till the following night! However, the owner was very kind in finding us a B&B for the night (despite it being peak season) and gave us a free drink and a discount off our final bill. When we first entered our room the next day, I was genuinely delighted with the size and decor of the room - by far the biggest room we had stayed in all fortnight (even compared to 4* hotels) and lovely warm colours. Only thing it missed was tea and coffee making facilities. A very spacious bathroom too and a good shower for once. The bar downstairs was great, food excellent - the best burger my husband's ever had he tells me (so he had it again another night!). Breakfasts were great, and the central location in Kenmare makes it so easy for coming back and relaxing during the day, and walking home at night after sampling the local music.

Not the cheapest, but sure nowhere in Ireland is cheap. I would go back here if I was ever in Kenmare.

My husband, sister and brother-in-law and myself all agree that this place was not our cup of tea. We all stayed at five other properties throughout Ireland and agreed that this was the worst! When we were planning our trip, we decided that a quaint B&B would be great for Kenmare. The description and photos on-line looked okay so we decided to book it. After a long day and night of driving through a down pour of rain, we arrived around 7:00 p.m. We could not find anyone to check us in and were getting very frustrated. Finally, another patron told us to see someone in the bar. After about twenty minutes we were told to go up to our rooms which ended up being about forty degrees and extremely bare to the bone. We could tell that the heat was just turned on, so we decided to go to the bar for a drink and food hoping that the room would be warmer upon return. Too bad it wasn't. The window in the bathroom would not stay shut and the wind was howling through the bottom. The blinds would not stay down and the bath towels were the thickness of paper towels and as small as a hand towel. We wanted to complain to someone, but there was only one other patron and ourselves in the whole building. I am quite sure that if workers or the owner stayed in the building, there would have been heat in the room. We discovered through a waitress that the owner turns the heat off during the "off" season. The next morning we made our way down to the breakfast room to find that only five people spent the night and none of them worked for the owner. The owner showed up twenty minutes later, quite annoyed at the fact that breakfast would not be served until 8:00 a.m. and it was only 7:00 a.m. After asking him why there was no heat, he said that there must have been a problem and that he would surely check into it. We told him that we would not be staying for two nights and would be checking out now. He said he would give us a "discount" on the room and apologized again. We never did really see Kenmare because of our awful experience at O Donnabhain's Guesthouse.

The only plus was that the pub and the waitresses were very nice and the food was pretty good. It is apparent that all of the money goeas into the pub.

So if you are looking for a quaint B&B to stay for personalized service, skip this B&B and save yourself the frustration.

Thanking you for your comments, one thie night in question, the heating pumps that bring the hot water through the system, were not working as they were tripping on and off, and eventually stoped completely. Things like this happen with equipment, and is beyond our control.

In relation to no one staying in the building, in the guest information, we have a mobile number which can be dialled in any emergancy, I live about 5 muinets away, and have to come in on occasions when someone is locked out, or if someone is sick in the middle of the night, or if something like heating, Hot water or electricty fails in the middle of the night. I have no problem comming in to sort out a problem if someone calls.

IN the morning in question, i appologised for the breakdown in the heating, and everyone who stayed that night was not charged, one of the gentlemen in your group came to reception and we discussed this, i appologised, and told him that i could not charge him due to the heating not working.

We cannot forsee when part of the building will not operate propertly, and again we appologise for the inconvience you have suffered.

“enjoyed our stay”

We really enjoyed our stay so much, we were a bit reluctant to come with all this about H&M in the news here. It was Dan O' Sullivan who stayed with you last year that informed us about the real situation, that their were going to be a few restrictions, but that it would not make much of a difference. All I can say is that we spent a week in Ireland, travelling around and we had the most wonderful time. Thank you Mr. Foley for taking the time every morning to plan our day, the day we went through the Black Valley and over the Gap of Dunloe, and around by the lakes of Killarney will be a day that I will cherish for the rest of my life, and if it was not for you we would have missed this beautiful place. We had a great time, our stay was comfortable, yuo and your people are so good to your guests, well done, and see you next year.

Stayed here in 2005. got a good deal as it was off season. Was really impressed with the place. Room was huge. Had dinner in the bar downstairs and it was very nice. Was after some mountaineering that day and it was a lovely place to come back to and relax. Would definitely stay again. Good breakfast too. bit more expensive than regular B&B but it is a cut above.

“Our only regret”

Out of all our accomodations in Ireland, this was the one place we would not return to. As another recent poster stated, upon arrival (after a long day of driving), the service, or lack thereof, was noticable. No one was available to check us in for about the first 20 minutes, and then it was pretty much a "we need payment now, see you for breakfast" thing. Not the end of the world, but we probably could have gotten better treatment elsewhere.

Again, similar complaints about the room, very cold with no heat, as an added bonus the caretaker had the room next to us and blasted her TV all night.

The one plus...the pub was nice and breakfast the next morning (I assume cooked by our hearing impaired neighbor) was excellent. Next time we would definitely stay elsewhere.

Oh, almost forgot, we checked our credit card statement last night, they charged us twice for the room. Again, I know you're not going to always get 5 star service with a B&B, but at least try to get things like billing correct.
