Some stays are wonderful. Some stays are memorable. Some stays are so perfect that you become irrationally angry at other TripAdvisor users who give the property anything less than an excellent review. Virginia's Guesthouse is one of the latter. It was, by far, the single most outstanding experience I have ever had at a B&B. I can't think of a single thing that Niall and Norreen could have done to make the stay better. I am already contriving a reason to go back to Kerry so that I can stay with them again.
Before you book, you should have a firm understanding that you are not checking in to Ashford Castle. As with most Guest houses, the accommodations are smallish and basic (although very modern and far from cramped) and there are not activities on site (apart from a library downstairs with books, games and 24-hour tea, coffee and water). My friend and I shared Room 25, a twin on the third (that's the second floor for people outside America) floor. It was furnished with a television and phone, as well as a private bathroom. The cleanliness and state of repair of the room was flawless. The rooms smelled very fresh and the temperature was easy to control. The bathroom wasn't large, but I had plenty of room to move around. It was well lit and there was great water pressure in the shower (which had a very easy to use temperature dial). Towels were plentiful and of good quality. Bath amenities were provided.
The room was nice, but not what merited the outstanding review.
First, the host and hostess are some of the warmest and most welcoming people I have ever met. From the second I stepped through the door, I was made to feel like a guest that they had been waiting impatiently for. They answered all of my questions about a good place to jog, helped us to book a horseback riding excursion, and offered suggestions for sightseeing itineraries and dinner (it's been said before, but don't miss Machulay's, the restaurant downstairs from the hotel! I had exquisite Beef Wellington there!). They really went above and beyond the call of duty when, after I lost my room key (it fell out of my pocket while jogging), they personally rewalked my route to find it so that they wouldn't have to charge me the lost key fee! (I was grateful, but felt guilty for putting them to the extra trouble! They DID find it in the end).
To anyone leery of staying in Bed and Breakfasts or Guesthouses, I would assure you that the host and hostess only interact as much as you want them too. We really only ran in to the other guests at breakfasts (and, occasionally, in the library downstairs). There is 24 hour access to the room and to the building (the hosts don't live there, and you are given a key to the entry), so it felt more like a "hotel" in that sense.
In addition to the hosts, I cannot rave enough about the breakfast. Not only was the menu interesting and varied, it was flawlessly prepared. If Noreen ever gets tired of running a guest house, she should consider taking over the restaurant downstairs. I had a terrible dilemma each morning over whether to try something new, or to stick to the delicious meal I'd had the morning before! The porridge with whisky cream is not to be missed! She also has the best bacon that I've ever tasted in my life!
Finally, I would like to say that this guest house was a great value for the money.
Book this guest house while you can! When we visited, the high season hadn't even started, but rooms were already running scarce. This place won't be a "Best Kept Secret" for long!
