“Good hotel but a few minor gripes”

Maritim Antonine Hotel & Spa

4 of 5 stars
Birmingham
Jul 7, 2008

Room excellent, comfy bed, good bathroom, big TV. Hotel was in a good location, plenty of places to eat nearby.

A few minor gripes.
- Good choice at breakfast, but quality of ingredients lower than I would expect from a 4*, particularly the fruit juices. Sugar bowls also seemed to be rationed.
- Although breakfast served until 10.30, staff start clearing up around 9.45, laying tables for lunch and reducing the amount of food available
- Fridge in room, is actually a minibar, with very little space for personal items
- Hotel management had a "no towels on sunbeds" policy, which was NOT enforced.
- Shuttle bus service to the beach, which the hotel boasts about, is a minibus that leaves at 9.30 and returns at 5.30. I was expecting a more regular service.

“Excellent Base”

Just returned from an excellent stay at the Maritim , we stayed for two weeks bed and breakfast allthough half board is available if required. The rooms are of a good standard and are large. We had a street facing room but as previous reviewers have said there is no street noise in the room the sound proofing is good with a large balcony. The air con in the room is not very cold but is just enough if left on . The restaurants at the hotel are very good Al ponte - Italian based good quality , and good value and also the Arches a top notch restaurant across the road from the main hotel building, good for a treat once / twice during your stay. The breakfast was very good for the full stay very fresh from 7.30 till 10.30 always replaced and hot. There has been a lot of talk about the difference the Euro has made to Malta, we found that it was still cheaper than the UK for meals drinks nights out etc. Use the local buses to get around the island there is a bus stop directly outside the hotel Three euros for an all day bus ticket . We also took the day trip to sicily fully recommend the trip but is a long day 5.00am till 12.30am the next day out of the hotel . I also recommend the Captain Morgan cruise around the island well worth doing.

“Great hotel!”

We stayed at this hotel for 10 nights BB and booked it through Cosmos. We arrived late afternoon and our pre ordered taxi was great, lovely man and gave us a good overview of the island and its history.
On arrival at the hotel we got checked in quickly and even though our room was in the building on the other side of the road this did not bother us at all.the tunnel which takes you to the other building was decorated well and looked recently done up.
The breakfast in the hotel was great - so much choice and could keep going back for more as much as you like. As we stayed as BB we went out everyday for lunch and dinner. At the top of the hill there are some great little cafes for lunch and in the evening there are plenty of restaurants along the road.
During the day we mainly spent time our time at the roof top pool. This was a lovely kept pool and did not get very busy and plenty of sun loungers to go around. The main pool on lower ground was usually more busy due to more shade from the gardens next to it.
We did manage to get out and about to view malta and arranged to go on a boat trip called ther Fernandes. This was a brilliant day trip!well worth the money!the food was much more than I ever expected.we got sandwiches in the morning and late afternoon and for lunch there was a buffet and choice or hot and cold food. There was every fruit supplied all day and free local wine! The boat trip took us to Gozo and Comino and the blue lagoon which is stunning! Here we got to go on a speed boat and view the caves!throughout the day the boat stopped off and let us jump out into the sea for swimming and snorkelling. This trip is a must see and the crew are lovely!
Overall it was a great trip and I would go again and stay at this hotel but take high factor sun cream -as its windy you forget how hot it is!

“Must book garden view room!!”

Maritim Antonine Hotel & Spa

Jul 1, 2008

We have just returned from the Maritim and although we did have a lovely holiday in Malta, we had a couple of problems at the hotel.
As some of the other reviews say, you really should book a garden view room. Mellieha is not what I would class as a village and so our "village view" room was actually on a noisy street. The hotel is split into 2 buildings and to get to the village side you have to walk thru an underground tunnell (not as unpleasant as it sounds!) and take 2 lifts. It's a bit of a drag if you have luggage or a baby like we do.
On the plus side the hotel is beautiful and the room itself was lovely and couldn't be faulted. The food was also excellent and worth considering H/B as there are 2 restaurants you can eat in and there's not much else nearby in terms of quality restaurants. The restaurant staff are very nice.
On the downside the reception staff are appalling. I'm sure that if you encounter no problems you would leave feeling very satisfied but our problems were basically ignored. We were staying in a room underneath some very noisy people who scraped their furniture accross the tiled floor all through the night (God knows what they were doing). Anyway, we felt we needed to complain as it was really disturbing our sleep. We were told that they "couldn't exactly ask the other guests to leave". We said we would just like to be moved but were told that there was not a single other room available which i find hard to believe. After our third complaint we were shown a room half the size which would barely have fitted in my daughter's cot and the air conditioning did not work properly. The staff were quite rude to us and very arrogant which I found surprising as the maltese are generally lovely people.
There isn't that much around the hotel and the walk to the beach is hard work. It's best to take the complimentary bus or hire a car. I would also advise that you avoid Billy's Car hire which is opposite the hotel and reccommended by the staff. We arranged for a taxi transfer from the airport thru the hotel and were picked up in a terrible old van. We hired a car from Percius car hire which is a small company that goes the extra mile to help you. I would really recommend them. They also do a taxi service which costs 25 euros compared to 33 euros from Billy's.
Although the Maritim is a great hotel with it's facilities I don't think I would stay in Mellieha again it is too remote. We booked through hotelconnect.co.uk who had a great rate if you are thinking of staying here.

“Would stay there again”

Maritim Antonine Hotel & Spa

Jun 25, 2008

I have just returned from a weeks stay in the Maritim Antonine, Mellieha, Malta where a fabulous time was had! A quiet village, more suited to couples, there's not much of a nightlife, but it's a great base. Definite musts are Giuseppe's and L'Amigo, great service and great food, Mellieha Church at sunset; the Blue Grotto which is in the south of the island and Mdina, the silent city.

We would stay in the hotel again, but had a few quibbles. It quite clearly states that loungers cannot be reserved; however this ruling was abused throughout our stay! You have to be up early to get a lounger with umbrella. As for the family of cats in the garden? It made me laugh to see them curl up to sleep on the towels used to reserve the loungers. Be careful of guests from other hotels using the complimentary shuttle bus to the beach. Guests from the Pergola were using the service, and on one occasion we could not get on and we had to make our own way there.

Was not impressed with fitness centre. Gym wasn't open until about 10am and only 1 piece of cardio equipment was working; there was no guard on the heating elements in the sauna (looked quite dangerous) and hot water dripped on us from the ceiling in the steam room; there were no alarms in either.

Great choice at breakfast, and apart from the hair in the pizza which did not belong to my husband, we enjoyed the food at the hotel.

Housekeeping was inconsistent, but the staff were very friendly. Pleasent enough room and we had a garden view which we would recommend.
