“horrible lady on the frount counter”

City Walk Hotel

It was a hundred dollars a night for a double with a bathroom in the centre of Canberra. We knew it was a backpackers so we didn't expect a high standard and with that in mind we were not dissapointed. Certainly no love from the owner - a mirror above the sink for crying out loud but sometimes budget places really go the extra length to live up to their names. What we never expected was after we checked out on day 3 the dragon behind the counter demanded 3 dollars each to store our bags. Two little black overnight bags. I argued the point that I have never ever had to pay to leave a bag for the day especially after checking out early 8am. Don't stay here and also sadly for a modern city the ease of walking or public transport was embarasing. Hire a car is the advice I give with a dissapointed look on my face. Burley griffen I would like a word.

“Loud, shabby and dirty”

City Walk Hotel

I had a double room with its own bath for AU$100 per night. It was rather grim in character, with shabby linens, a tiny TV, and the "nightstand" shown on this site in someone else's photos. (Towels were nice, though.) However, the real problem with it was really grubby--the toilet had a "Sanitized for your protection" strip but was dirty, the fan had someone else's food-stained handprints on it, etc. It was also INCREDIBLY loud--there was a bar across the street, and even with the windows shut, earplugs, fan humming in my ear, and 2 pillows over my head, I could still hear thumping music and shouting and screaming until 3:30 am, when it was replaced by the clank of street cleaners. Finally, the staff were highly variable: for example, one desk person's only suggestion for parking was a lot that required a new ticket every 4 hours, 24 hrs per day, whereas others were more helpful. On the last night of my stay, I arrived back at the room at midnight to find that the key card had been inadvertently changed so I was locked out. The desk is closed at night, and I had a bad moment when my first few phone calls to the after-hours emergency number went to voicemail, but eventually was let in. Friends stayed in slightly more expensive places in town which were perfectly fine--if you can afford a bit more, don't stay here. If you do stay, ask for a room NOT on the street.

Look, I realise this was cheap and that it has backpacker rooms, but I won't be rushing back any time soon. The location is terrific, but the rooms are claustraphobic and simple. I realised there was no air-con when I booked, but didn't think we'd need it in September. Even though the nights got down to single digits, the room positively baked and sleeping was difficult. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't very good either. Adequate accommodation is what I would describe the City Walk Hotel. I shudder at how hot the rooms would be in summer.

We stayed at this hotel based on the other reviews on this site. I am not sure they were staying at the same hotel.

Pros- Clean and central. That’s it.

Negs- No air conditioner. For $90 I don't expect my bed turned down with chocolates and designer toiletries, but I do expect a working air conditioner. It was stinking hot, and we could only open our window 8 inches.

For $90 I also expect wiring that doesn't look like it is going to catch fire in the next 24 hours. Seriously dangerous, see pictures, I am contacting which ever government agency is responsible for fire safety in Canberra hotels.

Conveniently faces loud absolutely pumping night club that shuts up around 4am. Badly mixed dance tracks echoing around the room for hours. Closing the window wasn't an option; see lack of air conditioner above.

Car access pretty poor. We were travelling with a baby and had to carry portably cot, luggage, and pusher from a block away.

If I had paid $50 for this room I would be less bothered by all this, but $90 is a joke.

The hotel is central, but considering how small Canberra is, any hotel is pretty much central.

“Fantastic Location and Hotel”

City Walk Hotel

I stayed at the City Walk Hotel in Febraury 2006. I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment and the price for the room (double) was only $65! I met the owner and found out the hotel had recently been refurbished and changed hands. She was lovely and the changes that they have made are fantastic. They got rid of the crappy old lift, made an outdoor area for smokers and the entrance is looking pretty good too (I was told before that it was very old and shabby, but it looks good now).

I was able to catch a bus to the Jolimont Bus Terminal, walk about 5o meters (less than 5 mminutes) go up a lift and be in my room. Dinner was just downstairs and I could catch a bus to just about anywhere in Canberra from the front door (the bus interchange).

If your like me and don't have the $100+ a night budget to work with this place is definately the motel for you.
