This hotel is in the perfect location for tourists or business people. It is within a 2 minute walk to the main train station, almost all trams pass the door, chinatown starts across the road and the big department stores are within a block.
The rooms are large and clean. They all have a microwave (along with all the things you'd expect from a top hotel).
My only complaint with this hotel (I have stayed here twice) is the very poor water pressure in the shower. For me, the most important qualities of a hotel are location, comfortable bed, quiet rooms and a good hot shower in the morning. They get full marks for the first three.

We decided to stay at this hotel based on the reviews
I had read on trip advisor. When I contacted the hotel to make my reservation I mentioned that this holiday was a birthday treat. When we arrived at the hotel and went up to our room the manager had left a
hand written birthday card for me...nice personal touch I thought. Our room was huge (we had booked a suite) and very clean. The view outside was of grey buildings and a glass roof top, I could see people working on computers through it.
I thought our room was abit tired and under furnished, the beds were really comfortable though.
Would I stay there again?...Yes if I was coming over
with friends for shopping etc..great handy location.
But if your after a romantic luxurious setting this is probably not the hotel for you.

“Great hotel in a great location”

Grand Mercure Flinders Lane Apartments

We stayed 2 nights in the Grand Mercure on Flinders Lane. Arriving at 7am due to an overnight flight, they managed to get us a room by 9am.... oh and they upgraded us to an executive suite in the same breath. And still at the original (and cheap) rate. A great start.

The hotel is very clean, the staff are very helpful and the laundry on the 6th floor is free to use - they even supply the detergent. Location-wise it would be hard to find somewhere better - the area is filled with restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and is no more than 2 minutes walk to the main station and the river.

The room was great (clean, quiet and a good size) the shower a treat, there are two channels of free in-room movies and our upgrade gave us a lounge area and kitchen, as well as access to a shared terrace. The bed was a little softer than some of the others we have slept in recently - but very comfortable.

This is the first time we've stayed in an Accor hotel and we will definitely return.

In terms of value for money, location and staff helpfulness, i think it's worth 5/5 on the TripAdvisor scale.

If you're looking for 5 star luxury for a special occasion then maybe try somewhere more expensive.

We are a recently retired couple who stayed in the Mercure from Jan. 14-17, 2006. Using our Advantage Plus card, the room cost us $210 Canadian/night. We would stay there again in an instant. It is centrally located only a few minutes walk from Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and the free trolley which tours the CBD in Melbourne. We did not realize when we booked that the Australian Open would be on in Melbourne while we were there and we were pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel was about a 20 minute walk along the banks of the Yarra River to Rod Laver Arena. This is an 'all suite' hotel with only a few regular hotel rooms and the suites are spacious, extremely clean and nicely appointed with a microwave, fridge, stove, and dishwasher in the kitchenette; a comfortable sitting area; 2 TVs etc. (at least in Room 704 which also overlooked the courtyard). Great value for the money.

“What A Treat!”

This hotel is incredible. The lobby is small but the suites are quite large... you could get lost in them! I stayed here while touring Melbourne when my husband was working in another city. The only problem I had while staying here was feeling guilty having a huge suite to myself while my husband was in a dinky hotel room. The rooms (entry, *kitchenette* w/ dinette, living room, bedroom and bathroom)were spotless and nicely arranged. Free newspapers and movies. The Mercure Grand Hotel is located right around the corner from the Flinders Street Station and the free city trolley that circles the central business district. I'd stay there again in a heart- beat!
