Waterfront Whitsunday Retreat

Mar 26, 2008

A sincere thank you to both Darren & Jeff at Waterfront Whitsunday Retreat for making our Easter stay one will we keep with us forever. I have visited Airlie Beach several times, however this property exudes sheer elegance and boasts an exclusiveness like no other. The service was fantastic and out of the 6 guests who joined me, all of who have travelled on an extensive basis, each of them could only give the highest of compliments. The three-bedroom penthouse was immaculate; the spa, the balcony, the ktichen, the fine dining room and of course, the main shower - all second to none. We felt as if the retreat was our home away from home with all of the added extras. Little things like lazing by the pool and Jeff coming out to put some music on for us and pour us some cold water to an extravagant box of chocolates delivered to us on Easter Sunday - i would highly recommend this property for anyone wishing to visit the Whitsundays. Waterfront Whitsunday made our stay and we intend to return with even more people next time! Magic, exclusive, serene and elegant.

I would like to let everybody know that my partner and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at Waterfront Whitsundays.

The owners ARE fabulous and went out of their way to welcome us ensuring a magnificent stay.

I would not hesitate in recommending Waterfront Whitsundays and feel that everyone who visits the Whitsundays should stay here to experience a gorgeous room and genuine hospitality.

We chose this hotel because of the excellent reviews on tripadvsior and were expecting great things, especially because of the price (approx AU$170 per night) and we decided to have one night in a lovely hotel before a sailing trip - We booked through rooms to go and checked in with a lovely guy who turned out to own the place. W were a little early due to our flight but he said that would be no problem, but that he was waiting for the aircon people to arrive to service the a/c in our room. However when we went into our room (decent size) there was a terrible smell in the room, which smelt foul, strongly musty and damp. I spoke to the manager and he explained that unfortunately there were no other rooms and that the service should fix the problem, and that we could open the doors and windows to air the room. There was no way I was about to pay this price for this standard of room. I had a quick look aroubnd the room (which was not particulary clean - dust on surfaces and bits on floor, toilet not clean) and the pool area (which was also not clean and covered in stuff) and we felt that the plastic shower enclosure, rusty bathroom unit legs and cheap looking fittings did not warrant the money. We spoke again to the manager (who was very understanding and even found us alternative accomodation) and he cancelled our booking. I understand that our experience was marred by the smell in the room but i feel that the whole place is overpriced. Also a letter was missing from the front logo of the hotel. Maybe that should have given me a clue..

Dear stephwana

Thank you for your review we are grateful for your feedback.

I am sorry that you decided to leave us early due to the musty smell from the air conditioning unit, as advised at the time the air conditioning unit was scheduled to be serviced that day as we had recognised some days earlier it required servicing and had placed the room on maintenance until it was serviced. When you arrived early we agreed to place your bags only in the room and I did explain that once the air conditioning was serviced this would eliminate the musty smell. The air conditioning service technician arrived soon after you left and serviced the air conditioning, we then cleaned the filters and to ensure total peace of mind we have an air purifier which I placed in the room for two hours. The room was absolutely perfect just before 2pm which is our published check in time, what a shame you did not experience the room once the air conditioning service had taken place.

In regards to the cleaning, I personally ensure every room is cleaned to very high standards, I was surprised you mentioned this in your review, however we appreciate your feedback and will ensure our attention to detail remains impeccable.

In regards to the pool area I can only assume the "stuff" you refer to is minor leaf litter from the Flametree that is situated adjacent to the pool area. At this time of year Flametrees start to loose their very tiny leaves and this poses a challenge to keep the pool area clear of this minor leaf litter. I can assure you we mop the pool area in the early morning and then again in the afternoon, early evening to ensure we do not distrub guests. The pool area is an important area for our guests to relax and enjoy the sunshine hence it is paramount for us to keep this area tidy.

I sincerely hope you enjoyed the alternative accommodation I assisted you with and trust you had an enjoyable time in our magical region. I do hope you may consider Waterfront Whitsunday Retreat in the future if travelling again in this part of the world, I will make certain any servicing to air conditioning is conducted (if required) prior to allowing access to the room.

Kind regards

Darren Thompson

“Nice hotel, not so nice view!”

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights before heading to one of the islands. The guys who run the place are great and were very helpful suggesting things for us to do and places to eat. They even drove us down to the main street when it was raining one night and then down to the marina to catch our ferry to the islands. They also booked our ferries for us and our transfer back to the airport.

The rooms were clean and nicely furnished, with a kitchenette area and a spa bath out on the balcony. The bed was comfortable – we both slept really well! The pictures on their website are pretty accurate (apart from the view!) if you want to check out what you get. Included in our rate was breakfast which they drop off in your room when you get there – it was fine, but nothing particularly exciting (box of cereal, milk, juice, yoghurt, cereal bars and fruit). I guess I want something a bit different when I’m on holiday to what I have at home! There’s also a DVD player in the room which we made use of bringing some films we’d been meaning to watch. At the moment the tv’s are a bit small for the rooms but apparently the guys who are now running it will be installing larger tv’s. There is a swimming pool which we didn’t use but it looked quite nice. There’s also a telescope at the pool for guests to use (although we only found out about that when we were leaving – they probably need to tell you a bit more about what’s on offer when you arrive)

The Waterfront is located about a 10 min walk (if that) from the main area of restaurants and bars which was fine. The issue we had was the view from our room which was of the construction site of a new marina. Whilst we didn’t hear any construction work, it’s not an ideal holiday view. It is also on a main road, so you do get a little bit of road noise – it didn’t really disturb us, but you couldn’t have the patio doors open when it was busy out there.

Overall it was a nice place to stay for a few days, but I think it was maybe a little overpriced (we paid $209/night which included breakfast and a $20 mini-bar voucher). I think they have a little further to go before I would consider it to be luxury accommodation. Around this time of year (March) a lot of places have discounts as its off-season, so it might be possible to get a better deal (but I don’t know – I’m just guessing!). The guys who are running it have only been there since December and are still making changes to the place (updating the tv’s etc.). If you don’t mind not having a great view then consider this as a place to stay. If you want the view then probably somewhere else would be better.

Dear lissag,

Thank you for your lovely feedback in regards to your stay earlier in the year.

I am delighted to advise that we have indeed upgraded facilities as discussed during your stay. The Luxury Spa Suites now include 127cm (50") High Definition Plasma Televisions featuring 4.3 trillion colours, XD engine and stereo surround sound. We have also installed 28 Austar cable television channels with movies, sport, news, music, kids entertainment and documentary channels along with recently installed digital TV which enhances the local television stations and offers greater viewing choice. We have also installed Mini Home Theatre systems which feature DVD/CD/MP3/USB options, digital Dolby surround sound and iPod connectivity. While enjoying the new range of entertainment facilities you can now enjoy premium Twinings teas (English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Lady Grey) and premium Twinings herbal teas (Peppermint, Lemon Twist, and Camomile). We have also upgraded our phone system, the suites now feature voicemail and direct in dial facility allowing guests the opportunity to have family and friends dial direct to their suite.

Some great enhancements for guests to enjoy.

We are committed to quality, both quality service and quality facilities. I do hope you will visit us again in the not to distant future.

Sincerely

The help and service we received from these guys was phonomenal.
We had flights cancelled and got in a real mess. They practically sorted out our onward journey and got our holiday back on track.
So glad we stayed here...Oh yes, and the room was excellent as well!
