My husband and I just stayed at the Courtyard Washington Convention Center for a long weekend (2 nights.) I had a Marriott voucher for a free night but it was limited to one of their "category 4" properties and, frankly, this one was it. We paid for the second night and got a very good AAA rate. So, all in all, it was a very "budget" stay.
We booked a standard room with a king-size bed. We checked in early on Friday with no problems and were given a room on the 9th floor with decent views of the Reynolds building (The Portrait Gallery) and the Spy Museum area. The room was smallish but fine for two people; there was a small sofa, coffee table and a desk. The TV was an older tube model on the small side (by today's standards...) Decent bed, nice linens, basic amenities like shampoo, hair dryer, etc. No mini-bar/fridge or robes.
The hotel is in a great location if you want to visit the Smithsonian/Mall; it took us about five minutes to walk to the National Archives. It's a block from the Galleria/Chinatown metro stop and two blocks from the Metro Center stop, so quick access to the red, blue and orange lines. It's across the street from the Reynolds building (with the Portrait Gallery) and the Spy Museum.
The hotel doesn't offer much in the way of public spaces. There isn't really much of a lobby and the "cafe" where they serve breakfast is a small space in the basement. The pool/exercise room is also in the basement; smallish and somewhat dingy but, still, nice to have in a city if you're traveling with kids.
We didn't try the restaurant attached to the hotel but there are so many restaurants in the immediate area -- everything from McDonald's to high-end foodie places. We opted to have breakfast the first morning at the Willard (Cafe du Parc) and loved it. For "happy hour", we just ran across the street to McCormick and Schmidts and sat at the bar, had drinks and oysters and watched the basketball playoffs. We had one dinner at Zaytinya and a lunch at Jaleo, both just a few blocks away.
We had a late flight out on Sunday and requested late check-out and although we're supposed to have some sort of "priority" when it comes to late check-out with our Marriott Rewards status, all they were willing to accommodate was 1:00 PM (only an hour later than the usual noon checkout.)
For what we paid (less than $150 for our "paid" night), this hotel was a great value. I've visited DC quite a few times and this hotel's location was definitely one of the most convenient.
