I decided on a whim to travel to Washington, DC for a short weekend getaway and booked one night at the Ritz-Carlton. Having just purchased a new car, I did not want to valet park, so I opted for self-parking in the garage under the hotel. There were no "in and out privileges," but the next morning I found out that I actually saved quite a bit (overnight parking was a paltry $6 as opposed to $35-$45 for valet), plus the piece of mind of parking my own car was priceless.
Check-in was uneventful. I did, however, notice that there were chocolate covered strawberries on a counter adjacent to the check-in counter, presumably for hotel guests. I thought it was a nice touch even though I did not indulge. I asked the receptionist at the front desk for help with my luggage and she quickly summoned a bellhop to accompany me to the second floor garage to retrieve my bags.
The bellhop was very attentive and immediately noticed that I was walking with cane in tow and asked if I wanted a room closer to the elevator. After a brief call downstairs, I was led to my new room and within the next 10 minutes, the gentleman was back with a new set of room keys. Plus one point for the Ritz -Carlton bellhop.
Next, I called the concierge for recommendations for a steakhouse and she sent my friend and me to The Prime Rib. I was surprised she did not offer to make reservations for us or admonish us about the rather formal dress code for men (required to wear a jacket). This would have been helpful seeing as how I was wearing jeans, Gucci loafers, a button up, an ascot, and an Hermes three-quarter length rain coat. Despite wearing what I thought was a fashionable ensemble, the gentleman at the door advised me I had to wear a proper jacket. Minus one point for the Ritz concierge.
Other than this hiccup, I had another minor problem with the shoe shine service. I placed my shoes in the bag and called just as the form directed; the lady at the front desk advised me to place them on the door even though the form said not to place them on the door for security reasons. After midnight, I called again to inquire about the pickup and also about placing the shoes on the door, contrary to what was advised on the form, and the same lady from the front desk advised, “Sir, I told you…..” Good thing for her I was tired and did not feel like making an issue out of it. Nevertheless, I felt her tone was inappropriate. Minus two points for the rude lady at the front desk.
The next morning I woke up to find that I had a Washington Post paper when I had specifically requested a New York Times when I was asked my preference at check-in. Minus three points from the lady at the front desk and/or whomever delivered the wrong paper.
Before checking out, I called the bellhop for assistance with my luggage again. This gentleman advised me that he was “not supposed” to accompany hotel guests down to the second floor parking garage elevators. After I advised him that the gentleman last night had no qualms about it, he said he would see what he could do. In the end, he did accompany me, but I wondered why I had to challenge him. Am I at the Ritz-Carlton or the local Holiday Inn? Minus four points for the combative bellhop.
Overall, a good hotel, but still room for improvement. Given that their rates range from say $300-$700, not sure I would stay here again unless I was able to secure an especially good rate. It’s the Ritz-Carlton, so I expect things to be impeccable and as my story clearly illustrates, there were a couple of shortcomings. DC has no shortage of luxury hotels, so I might try somewhere else next time. All of my issues were minor ones, but when added together, they compound and make you think twice. I’m curious about the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, so I think the next time, I will give them a go instead.
