We just finished a four day stay over Easter weekend at Embassy Suites Chevy Chase after a friend of a friend who lives in Washington DC recommended it. We are a family of five, kids ages 13, 11 and 8, and there was plenty of room in the suite. We had a suite with a king size bed, queen pull out sofa and ordered a rollwaway bed which fit nicely at the foot of the king. We got around the city almost exclusively via the Metro. The access to the Metro is very good and does not require you to leave the hotel to get there. Tip - You do not want to be driving in Washington! There are a million traffic lights and once you get to where you are going, finding a parking spot is difficult to say the least. Take the Metro everywhere and walk. It is safe and very convenient.
The Embassy complementary breakfast is excellent and exceeded my expectations. Also, there is a Starbucks on the first floor of the mall which was a bonus! The kids looked forward to a frappacino in the late afternoon after a day of sightseeing. In addition, there are plenty of good restaurants within the complex (Cheese Cake Factory and Maggiano's) as well as within walking distance (Chadwicks for a very good lunch or Clydes for dinner).
The pool, although not big was very adequate for my eight and eleven year old. The hot tub is next to the pool and was good size. There is also a quality work out room directly adjacent to the pool area.
Across the street is a Galleria, with a Neiman Marcus, a Bloomingdales behind that, and a Lord and Taylor behind that. The Galleria has a movie theater if the weather doesn't cooperate. One note: they are building a new store across the street on the Galleria side of the hotel and they begin work at 7:00 am. If this doesn't wake you up the ambulance/fire truck that goes by seemingly early will wake you. Weekends were much quieter.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the monuments by moonlight tour:

This was a two hour tour that the kids absolutely loved. I would highly recommend it. There is nothing like seeing Washington at night. Take the Metro to Union Station, have dinner first and then take the tour. Our tour was supposed to be 2 1/2 hrs. but actually took 3 hours.
Overall I would highly recommend staying at the Embassy Suites Chevy Chase. Do not let the fact that you are not staying right in DC scare you. The hotel is beautiful, great for kids, easy access to the Metro, scrumptuous breakfast, and very good restaraunts in the hotel or close by, all at a super value price. We would stay here again in a minute.
