“Great location but there are better choices in DC”

Marriott at Metro Center

Jun 23, 2008

Booked this on the Marriott site - Elites save 25% and get a $25 bonus bucks coupon.

walked into lobby - it smells damp and just blah - nothing special about the lobby - a few places to sit and wait and relax, an over priced cafe/part time Starbucks (fruit flies!), giftshop.

Room - my room was on the top level near the ice machine (which ran all night). A King NS. The king bed takes up a LOT of space - the non upgraded television cabinet + bed = tight quarters. the room smelled damp as well. not sure if this was just a DC thing because of the warm weather or what.

Bathroom - decent size - no complaints.

Fitness center is perfect - a bit of something for everyone - sauna, pool, at least 4 treadmills, free weights, yoga mats, etc.

There is a coin laundry on site for those that like to personally do laundry on the road.

I entered the hotel during different times (including late late night/early morning and afternoon) and the lobby STILL had a "eww" smell to it.

went to a hotel 5 blocks away to visit a friend - despite the funky decor, the lobby did not smell, the rooms on the 2nd level were HUGE and did not feel cramped .

cmon Marriott UPGRADE/UPDATE this property!!! - this hotel is in a great location - Macy's DIRECTLY across the street, Metro Center Metro stop and plenty of restaurants within walking distance.

“Great Central hotel”

Marriott at Metro Center

Jun 15, 2008

We recently stayed at the Marriott Metro Center to do the 'tourist thing' while visiting my son. I recommend this hotel for its central location being 200 yards from the metro tube and also directly across from Macy's for the retail therapy. I had booked 2 rooms and without asking was given adjoining rooms which was excellent and the rooms were ready even though we booked in in the morning. The room was very clean and as usual for a Marriott, the beds extremely comfortable. Breakfast was either a buffet or to order but my scrambled egg was made fresh even though we were having the buffet. The iced drinks in the lobby were extremely welcoming considering the extreme heat that particular weekend we were staying (100 F). The open top tour bus also stops directly in front of the hotel.
The only downside is the parking fee ($30 a day)

“Memorial Day Weekend 2008”

Marriott at Metro Center

4 of 5 stars
Richmond, VA
May 27, 2008

Stayed at the Marriott at Metro Center May 23, 24, 25. The hotel name is truly accurate. It is located on the same street and block as Metro Center and we found this to be very convenient to say the least. I checked in around noon which was well before the official 4 pm check-in time but they managed to have a room available. The rooms are on the smaller side but had the typical Marriott amenities. Only a few things to nitpick about. Shower handle faceplate kept falling off, bed sheets kept slipping off one of the corners, and I truly expected a larger TV for a Marriott. I paid only $134 per night because Marriot had a deal going on for Elite members and I considered that a more than fair price for what I received. I would not pay the $250 per night that I'm sure many of the other guests were paying for this property. Very friendly and efficient staff. I was of two minds about the very good security. You have to show your room key to a security person to get on the first floor elevators and I suppose that is good thing but it made me feel concerned as to why they needed good security in the first place. That being said, I had no security issues at the hotel during my stay and truly enjoyed everything. I used the indoor salt water pool which was the right temperature and big enough but only 3-1/2 ft. deep for most of it thereby making it fairly useless to adults. I had dinner at the Metro Grill hotel restaurant one evening and it was fairly good but there are just so many great D.C. restaurants that it doesn't make sense to eat at the hotel. I used the hotel business center and it was state of the art but like everything else at this hotel, anything extra you do costs extra. This is not unique to this particular hotel but more of a general "everything in D.C. costs extra" deal. I would stay here again mainly because Metro Center is on the same block and it was gloriously easy to jump on and off the Metro. I could get from my room to being on the Metro and vice versa in less than five minutes. Cosi restaurant right next to the hotel is great for lunch or dinner. Sit outside, enjoy your meal and the "people watching", but please note you will have to say no once or twice to a few homeless people who are constantly begging throughout D.C. The homeless are fairly polite and nothing to fear but some people are more uncomfortable around them than others. I have stayed in many hotels in D.C. and this hotel would certainly comfortably be in my top ten as long as you are paying the right price i.e. under $200 a night.

“Nothing Better than Mediocre - Pick another Marriott in DC”

Marriott at Metro Center

May 26, 2008

There is nothing *wrong* with this hotel, per se. But for a property that on average charges over $400/night, you should get more. Much more. And here, you don't. Let me give you some examples:
* Lack of basic knowledge by front desk staff. On a Friday night, I asked the front desk staff if they knew where a certain well-known DC restaurant was located. None of them knew and had to consult a restaurant book. The restaurant was on the next block.
* There are two suites in the entire hotel - compared to 50 or more at some of the other Marriott locations in DC. Don't think you'll get a better room here if you are a Gold or Platinum Marriott member - because there aren't any.
* An assistant manager called during the stay to see how all was going - a nice gesture - and if we had any questions. I asked her a simple question about ordering room service and she said it had to be done by visiting the hotel restaurant in person, not over the phone. Wrong.
* The decor is, well, like a Fairfield Inn. Nothing wrong with it, except it is far from the decor of other Marriotts in the US or even DC.
* There are no decent common areas. There is a long, narrow lobby - not conducive to either socializing or working, and a ridiculously expensive pseudo-starbucks (latte + croissant = $11). There is no pool.
* Room neighbors were noisy, and it appears having college kids on the premises is quite a common occurrence.

That said, the location is fantastic, which is why I booked this place. It was also clean. So picture a tall Fairfield Inn in a great location - right between the two major Metro hubs, and that's what you get. Ambience? no. Service? forget it. In retrospect, I should have tried the JW Marriott or Mayflower Rennaissance. Next time.

“Will return.”

Marriott at Metro Center

May 19, 2008

Chose this hotel based on tripadvisor reviews when I needed to attend a meeting at the DC Convention Center & was very pleased. I am fussy, particularly about cleanliness & about quiet. When a relatively noisy couple with a baby moved in next door, I was upset, because I had a lot of work to get done. The hotel staff was simply wonderful & in spite of the hotel being full, managed to move me to a better location- nice & quiet. All of my interactions with staff, from front desk to room service were stellar, totally courteous, pleasant & professional. The room was clean & the bed wonderful. Location was good - an easy walk to the convention center & right at the metro stop as well. My only complaint is that I am always irked when charged for internet access in the more expensive hotels while it is free at the Courtyards.
