“Great Hotel”

Atlas Riad Medina & Spa

4 of 5 stars
London, United Kingdom
Jun 17, 2008

We have just got back from Marrakech on June 11th.
The hotel was fantastic. The staff were friendly and most of them spoke a bit of english which helped as other people in marrakech do not speak a lot!
We arrived there at 10pm and tried to exchange money at the hotel, except they had ran out of money! so we had to take a walk to the hotels nearby and eventually with a lot of persuasion got £60 exchanged from their sister hotel!
The room was lovely and clean, very big. Had minibar, hairdryer, safe, clean towels, bathrobe and lots of little goodies, such as shampoo, shower gel and body lotion!
The only downfall was the room was at the back of the hotel so it wasn't a very good view, would have preferred a pool view. But as we were only there for 3 nights, we wern't too bothered.
It was quiet at night, beds were comfortable. We had two 3/4 sized beds. would be a problem for couples so request a double bed if required! The room was cleaned everyday.
The pool area was great, very relaxing and clean. Although it was initially very cold but once I was in it, it was fine!
We only had a bed and breakfast board, which was fine. Great selection for breakfast. Only thing I wasn't impressed with was the prices for tea! We had tea once in the afternoon near the pool, 2 cups cost us almost £7!! Food outside hotel is reasonable though.
There was an indoor pool and spa, but when we went to have a look around all the women that worked there just stared at us and wern't very helpful. so we didn't go back! looked nice though!
Was easy enough to catch taxis near the hotel to Mcdonalds, kfc and pizza hut! and also to the main square ( jema el fena) for about 15 dirhams (or 7 if you ask them to put meter on. very rare though!). and about 20-25 dirhams at night.
Overall great hotel, would definetly recommend it and would go there again!

“Average 4 star hotel”

Atlas Riad Medina & Spa

Jun 15, 2008

Stayed at this "5 star" hotel for 4 nights in June 2008.

The first thing to say is that we paid £60 per night for a twin room; which for this hotel is very good value.

The hotel definitely has a 4 star feel to it, with carpeted hallways and warm, carpeted bedrooms of very high standard. Bathrooms are mosaiced and fairly nice also (no "dirty" feel to bathrooms).

The beds in the twin rooms felt like 3-quarter size and were very comfortable.

Air conditioning is standard and helps a whole heap.

Minuses: Awful breakfast - you get toast, scrambled eggs, cereal, tea and little else. Very poor. If you are big on your'e breakfasts then don't stay in this hotel as you will be sorely disappointed. We only had the breakfast once and then didnt bother thereafter.

Swimming Pool: Very basic and just about adequate.

The drinks at this hotel are very expensive; though this is the case all over morocco.

Location: reasonable to good; short taxi ride to medina or new town. short taxi ride to airport. Several other hotels nearby and this hotel is 50 yards from several nightclubs; some of which are very good.

Didnt make use of spa facilities or much dinner so cannot comment; just to say that it is all very expensive !

Advice: Make sure you get a room with a view over the pool or overlooking the main road (which is quite nice also).

Bear in mind that you are not allowed to bring local or non-resident females back to your'e hotel room unless you can produce a marriage certificate !

I would consider staying at this hotel again simply because of the good price and quality of the rooms + location.

“Long but Informative; We would Stay again!”

Atlas Riad Medina & Spa

4 of 5 stars
Bellevue, WA
May 27, 2008

This was the hotel chosen for my husband's business conference. After reading the negative reviews, we were hoping they were exaggerated. They definitely were! From the moment we entered the hotel, the staff was very attentive and professional. It was very late, and we were exhausted. When we got to our room, we were very happy to see it was spacious and spotless. A vase with fresh flowers and a fruit plate awaited us. We did hear the music from the night club downstairs but it was muffled and never kept us awake.

The hotel has wireless internet service, and, we were able to get HBO & CNN on the TV. Their wake-up service was 100% punctual and they even called back 5 minutes later to make sure we woke up. The bath was very elegant and the shower was fantastic! All modern amenities throughout. One review mentioned broken airconditioning. We thought ours was too, but the technician explained that when the patio door is open, it shuts off. To resume, the patio door needs to be closed and locked.

The best part by far was the amazingly beautiful dining room, boasting an unbelievable breakfast and dinner buffet! Too wonderful to describe. There is no set rule for tipping, but our typical 15% is a bit much. We did not hesitate however, to give more than 10% for exceptional service. One waiter remembered the wines our party of 5 had two days prior and asked if we'd like the same.

The L-Shaped pool is surrounded by palm trees, with a kiddie-pool off to the side for the little ones. The loungers are covered every morning with blue towels, which are replaced throughout the day as guests leave. The gift shop is a little pricey compared to the markets, where you are expected to bargain, but they do take credit cards and have a very interesting assortment of Morrocan womens' clothing and jewelry, as well as shoes and souvenirs. From this conveniently located hotel, you can take a taxi to the main souk (market) and many other local attractions for 35-40 Dirahm, or about $5-$6 (divide by 7.)

At the end of the block there is a very nice divided stone walkway that runs for at least a mile down the middle of the 4-lane boulevard. Great place for a stroll after dinner at dusk. The double-decker hop-on-hop-off red bus stops right across the street; buy the tickets at the hotel.

Don't be skeptical to stay at the Atlas Medina! Just relax and open yourself to the experience. And remember, you really ARE a world away, so don't expect anyone in their world to understand more than a few words of English or for things to be exactly as you would expect them to be in the States. French & Arabic are equally spoken and understood by the locals. But we managed just fine.

“Absolutely loved this fantastic hotel!”

Atlas Riad Medina & Spa

May 20, 2008

After reading the reviews on here we were a little nervous about staying here but in all honesty I have no idea how previous reviewers had bad experiences when we had such a fantastic stay!

Everything about the hotel was great, the food, decor, rooms, pool, staff etc was all top class! If I had to pick one thing that was not 100% perfect and that would be the price of alcoholic drinks in the bar but that was only because of my expectations. I would expect them to be cheap but they were in no way expensive, just similar to London prices.

The food was excellent, with a fantastic choice, masses of salads, tajines, hot food and the puddings were just amazing! It was like being in a patiserrie every day!

The rooms were large, we had 3 adults in one room with plenty of space and the bathrooms were lovely, really nice tiling and lovely toiletries. Even a speaker over the loo so you could hear the tv!

Speaking of the TV, you have access to ITV, BBC1 and more 4 plus one so great if you are in your room and want to watch some British TV!

We never had any problems getting a sun lounger by the pool, there were plenty and the men who worked at the pool would bring you over towels and parasols if you want them. There are also very clean toilets at the pool. The pool itself was a little cold but once you got in it was fine and there is a seating area in the pool which is great if you want to read your book in there.

All staff were friendly and helpful and even though I did speak a bit of French, you would be absolutely fine if you don't.

A taxi to and from the hotel to the airport should cost about 60DH and about 20DH any where in and around the Medina.

I would also recommend Hamman Zianni right by the palace for a completely relaxing experience lasting over an hour for about £20.

“Great hotel!”

Atlas Riad Medina & Spa

5 of 5 stars

2/2 found this review helpful

My wife and I booked this hotel for a week for our wedding anniversary, after booking, started to read the reviews on this site and started to wish I hadnt booked at all, we were very aprehensive about the trip.
I am pleased to say our worries were unfounded.

The hotel is about 15-20 minutes drive from the airport, when you arrive at the hotel you cannot fail to be impressed by the grand marble entrance and reception. (If you do fail to be impressed maybe you are acustomed to the sort of luxury that most of are not)

The staff were very helpful and friendly, all speak a little english (enough to get by) but if you speak a little french this is very helpful.

The rooms are very large, our bathroom bathroom was huge, the balcony overlooked the pool and the view was great. The rooms (and the rest of hotel) are spotless there are staff cleaning 24/7. Although we booked a double room we got a twin. This said ,each bed was a three quarter size and when pushed together (easily done) made for the biggest bed we had ever slept in! You will have probabily read bad things about noise from the club attatched to the hotel, we didnt hear it once but our room was at the opposite side of the hotel and Im not sure if it was even open.

The pool area does get quite crowded and if it is busy there may not be any beds left but there is a member of hotel staff at the pool (all day, every day) who will try to accomodate you by nicking chairs from the outside bar. They also provide all your towels. The pool is refreshing (ie heart stoppingly cold) so be prepared.

Now, food. The breakfast was ok, lots of choice but the same everyday and they serve it till quite late as well if you want a lie in(10.30 I think). We stayed bed and breakfast which I would recommend, we ate twice at the hotel in the evening, once in the a'la carte restaurant (nice but pricy) and once in the main restaurant (ok and very pricy). Would recommend eating out in one of the many restaurants instead (there is an amazing little Italian in the new town behind and to the left of Mcdonalds, ace food, buzzing atmosphere, cheap and licsenced, be prepared to que outside) As a rule restaurants in the new town are liscenced, many in the old town inc the square are not. Lunch at the hotel is more reasonably priced then evening meals, the menu is simple but nice and best enjoyed by the pool bar.

The pool bar is quite expensive compared to places outside the hotel, prices are similar to english prices (2.50 - 3.00 for a beer or wine) staff are friendly and helpful and will serve you by the pool if you wish.

We did not use the spa facilities as they seemed expensive and are not included in the price as some guests seemed to think.

A lot of reviews say this is not a five* hotel, there is some truth in this in that it probabily is not what you expect if you frequent 5* hotels regularly in England or maybe America but lets not forget you are in Africa here, its probably more like a 4*, but I think you could apply this rule generaly (if you book into a 4* it would likely be more like a 3* if you dont like the idea of this probabily not the country for you) but do not let this put you off, this is a wonderful hotel and Marrakech is an interesting vibrant culture shock of a city. Go see it and stay at the Atlas Medina while you do.
