My wife and I booked this hotel for a week for our wedding anniversary, after booking, started to read the reviews on this site and started to wish I hadnt booked at all, we were very aprehensive about the trip.
I am pleased to say our worries were unfounded.
The hotel is about 15-20 minutes drive from the airport, when you arrive at the hotel you cannot fail to be impressed by the grand marble entrance and reception. (If you do fail to be impressed maybe you are acustomed to the sort of luxury that most of are not)
The staff were very helpful and friendly, all speak a little english (enough to get by) but if you speak a little french this is very helpful.
The rooms are very large, our bathroom bathroom was huge, the balcony overlooked the pool and the view was great. The rooms (and the rest of hotel) are spotless there are staff cleaning 24/7. Although we booked a double room we got a twin. This said ,each bed was a three quarter size and when pushed together (easily done) made for the biggest bed we had ever slept in! You will have probabily read bad things about noise from the club attatched to the hotel, we didnt hear it once but our room was at the opposite side of the hotel and Im not sure if it was even open.
The pool area does get quite crowded and if it is busy there may not be any beds left but there is a member of hotel staff at the pool (all day, every day) who will try to accomodate you by nicking chairs from the outside bar. They also provide all your towels. The pool is refreshing (ie heart stoppingly cold) so be prepared.
Now, food. The breakfast was ok, lots of choice but the same everyday and they serve it till quite late as well if you want a lie in(10.30 I think). We stayed bed and breakfast which I would recommend, we ate twice at the hotel in the evening, once in the a'la carte restaurant (nice but pricy) and once in the main restaurant (ok and very pricy). Would recommend eating out in one of the many restaurants instead (there is an amazing little Italian in the new town behind and to the left of Mcdonalds, ace food, buzzing atmosphere, cheap and licsenced, be prepared to que outside) As a rule restaurants in the new town are liscenced, many in the old town inc the square are not. Lunch at the hotel is more reasonably priced then evening meals, the menu is simple but nice and best enjoyed by the pool bar.
The pool bar is quite expensive compared to places outside the hotel, prices are similar to english prices (2.50 - 3.00 for a beer or wine) staff are friendly and helpful and will serve you by the pool if you wish.
We did not use the spa facilities as they seemed expensive and are not included in the price as some guests seemed to think.
A lot of reviews say this is not a five* hotel, there is some truth in this in that it probabily is not what you expect if you frequent 5* hotels regularly in England or maybe America but lets not forget you are in Africa here, its probably more like a 4*, but I think you could apply this rule generaly (if you book into a 4* it would likely be more like a 3* if you dont like the idea of this probabily not the country for you) but do not let this put you off, this is a wonderful hotel and Marrakech is an interesting vibrant culture shock of a city. Go see it and stay at the Atlas Medina while you do.
