At the risk of sounding like a complete downbeat gloom monger, I must advise anyone of sound mind and body not to book a stay at the Riad Mogador. It is, quite simply, the worst hotel I have ever been to in my life.
My girlfriend and I checked in after having spent a nice week on the Atlantic coast in Agadir, and were pretty sure from the outset the place was going to be a disaster. The check-in staff barely acknowledged our arrival, and grudgingly allowed us to check in as if we were a burden, before nodding us in the direction of our room with no more than a grunt.
We expected a room with a balcony (thank you Expedia for that 'all rooms have balconies' description, you deceitful swines) but eventually we found our way down dark, gloomy corridors (literally- the lights didn't work no matter what switches we tried) to a room with a single glazed window and no balcony, which was barely big enough to contain the filthy double bed. It was baking hot in the room... 'A-ha,' I thought 'I will switch on the air con. Expedia said all rooms have it. Thank goodness'...and guess what? It didn't work. The ridiculously rude welcome we had received didn't exactly fill us with the confidence to go and ask reception to get it fixed.
We also expected satellite tv, instead finding ourselves with a battered up old 10 inch tv with two channels. I don't mean that we had come to a great place like Marrakech to watch tv, but it was another bit of superb false advertising on Expedia's part.
We had a delightful view of the petrol station and coach drop off point, and to compliment it we were greeted by the wondrous sounds of vehicles, arguments and car horns. Within 5 minutes of entering the room we witnessed a fight between half a dozen men on the forecourt of the petrol station - of course we know this is not the fault of the hotel, but it added to the misery the horrible room had given us. Another completely confidence-inspiring feature of the petrol station was the view of locals filling their tanks with the pump in one hand, a cigarette in the other.
We decided to chuck our bags down and have a wander round after a quick shower. Well, the light in the bathroom did not work, nor did the door close. The shower and the sink were mouldy and cracked, and the bathroom was no bigger than a broom cupboard. I have never seen anything like it. In order to sit on the loo (not that I would recommend that in a place as disgusting as this was) you had to rest your legs in the aforementioned moludy shower. Nice.
Not to be put off, after all we were only staying for two days, we attempted to venture out to see the city. We were accosted by the hotel's security guard, who demanded to know where we were going before literally physically forcing me into a cab before being slipped some money by the driver. Nice to think I helped that goon get a kick back. We wandered down to the supermarket below, and realised that it was at least partly responsible for the strange, nasty smell that engulfed the hotel.
That was pretty much the last straw, and within a couple of hours of checking in we had had enough, and checked out, heading to the wonderful Kenzi Farah a short drive away. Compared to Riad Mogador it seemed like heaven. Our lasting image of the place was the receptionist not even looking up as we handed the keys back as we were leaving.
I don't mean to sound so negative, but I am simply trying to convey just how disgusting this place was. So perhaps I do mean to be this negative. The staff, the location, the cleanliness. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I know there are people who will think 'Hey, come on, you pay for a 3*, this is what you get'...but I have stayed in 3* hotels before that have looked like the Ritz next to this place. If it was possible this should be -10*.
Do yourselves a favour - do not go here.
