We booked this hotel as part of our safari organised by our travel agent Aim 4 Africa and Roy's Safari's in Arusha. From the hotels web site we were expecting something special but this hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. The accomodation is first class as is the food, going to sleep serenaded by hippo's is a new experience. We only had 2 nights here and wished we had booked more. The game drives in this area are less crowded than in the central Serengeti which is another bonus.

“Tented Luxury In Wonderful Situation”

Migration Camp inhabits the luxury end of the tented camp market in the Serengeti along with Kleins and the Grumeti River Camp. I cannot speak for the latter two but they would have to go some to beat Migration Camp. Our extended family group of seven spent two nights there (occupying three tents) and had expected something rather more spare. Instead we were amazed at how luxurious the accommodations were, all the more so given the fairly remote location of the camp. To take just one example, also commented on by someone below, each tent contains a large deep comfortable leather chair in mint condition, the sort of thing you expect to find in a fine European hotel, not deep in the East African bush. Drinks are included in the price, laundry is free. The South African managers are very companionable and the place is clearly expertly run. Great food, wonderful common areas. The view is to the west and the sunset. Etc, etc, etc. Significantly, it is in the north central part of the park away from the maddening hordes. We were there in early August and saw none of the heavy vehicle traffic encountered further south. What we did see was a significant stream of the wildebeest migration, one of whose routes ran just outside the camp. This was clearly the best area for game viewing in the Serengeti while we were there. Along with the Kikoti Camp in Tarangire National Park to the south, which although somewhat more rustic was more beloved for all that--see my review--this was our favorite stop on our trip. You will not find better.

“Fantastic Place!”

This place is awesome. Not sure how to describe it, you have to see it to believe it. Contemporary rustic maybe? Is there such a style? It has hardwood floors, high ceilings, and overstuffed leather chairs. You need to look at my pictures. Since it sits on the side of a hill everything opens up to nature. All the lodge areas have an open side facing the view. You feel like you are outside no matter where you go. When you stand on the top deck at the lodge you can see the Hippos lying by the river. Probably 50 of them. They come up by the tents to feed at night and can be noisy. The food was the best we had on the trip. Four Course meals and we always had 2 choices for the entrée ad desert, but only one for soup, salad. I know you are now feeling sorry for me. The one morning we wanted to sleep in and have breakfast in the tent, they didn’t hesitate at all. One thing I didn’t know or probably did know and forgot was that everything is included, laundry, alcohol drinks, sodas, water. everything. I would have saved my laundry if I had remembered.

The tent had 3 twin beds with great bedding. A desk and an overstuffed leather chair. It also had a wrap around deck which was great. At the lodge they had a top deck with a fire every night before dinner. They also had a small swimming pool that only one family of kids used when we were there. Full electricity and hot showers. This place was elegant but laid back at the same time. We felt very comfortable here and wish we would have stayed for an extra night. Best place we stayed at.

When we were signing in, I mentioned to the camp manager that I hoped to get a view because at Kirawira all we saw were trees in front of the tent. He asked the check in person what room we had then he didn’t say anything. When we got to the tent it the last tent (19), I see why he didn’t say anything. It was surrounded by large bushes so there wasn’t any view at all and it was next to the employee village which translated into very noisy late into the night (they had TV). If you go, put a request in for tent number 16, you won’t be sorry.

Wish we would hae stayed 1 more night.

“A Wonderful Property”

This camp was a bit of a surprise as the website absolutely does not do it justice. It is stunning.

There are no cars inside the camp -- you walk on an elevated boardwork to reach the reception/lobby tent. The main tent is beautiful, with dark wood floors, leather furniture, and groovy African art and light fixtures. A nice pool is right below.

We were met with drinks, snacks, cool towels, and about ten staff members upon arrival. I forgot to mention that our guide, Alex, met us at the airstrip with drinks and snacks as well. The host, Sandy, greeted us and told us everything we needed to know. He and his wife are extremely capable and friendly.

There is a west-facing deck close to the main tent where drinks and canapes are served before dinner...the sunsets are awesome. Dinner is a five-course affair served in the lovely dining tent or on the adjoining patio. The food is not gourmet, but it is tasty with a few outstanding dishes. Breakfast is very good (eggs, bacon, pastries, fruit, etc.) and our picnic lunches looked better than the ones from the neighboring properties (eggplant salad, cold quiche, cucumber sandwiches, chocolates...).

There is always beef jerkey, cookies, incredible fried cashews, and a selection of cold drinks in the safari vehicle.

Our guide was good, but his English wasn't exceptional and he drove awfully fast.

The "tents" at the Migration Camp were incredible -- very un-tent-ish. Beautiful hardwood floors, luxurious bedding, a nice bathroom, a pretty deck, the works. A butler-type person bearing coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and cookies serves as your wake-up call. There are no TVs or telephones.

The service was impeccable. The staff anticipated your needs and wants before you could express them. They were courteous, efficient, and friendly. If you're going to the Serengeti, I would absolutely urge you to stay at the Migration Camp.

Tented accommodation was very good; smart, comfortable. Staff were very helpful; food was great. Note that the Camp is built on a hillside - the entrance, the lounge, the pool, the bar and the dining room are at the top of a long flight of steps; all the tents/accommodation are at the bottom, so it's not really not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.
