“Great Hotel !”

Windhoek Country Club Resort

Mar 28, 2008

Really good hotel with great staff. First trip to Namibia so didn't know what to expect. Some less than good reviews so thought about changing but didn't. Great base for the local Eros airport to start any fly in Safaris or trips to the coast and the dunes. Good location in Windhoek with a shuttle service to town centre. The concierge manager is a real character and was extremely helpful.

“4 Star, Are You Kidding ... Barely o.k. for a Night”

After visiting Namibia for 2 weeks we needed one last night 's accommodation in Windhoek to catch an early morning flight. Finding accommodation in Windhoek I found a little challenging. We didn't want the hassle of a bed and breakfast and a location that wasn't in the downtown was important to us. We chose the Windhoek Country Club based on location, and its rating. We joked about staying at a 'Country Club' and thought it would be very nice. We were looking forward to a very nice hotel to rest before our flight.

The location was terrific. We had been driving all day and we were both beat. We checked in and the restaurant and lobby was very nice. Our room was more like a roadside inn. The mattress, pillows and bedding were deplorable. Everything should have been recyled or thrown out long ago. The mattress was worn, sagging and awful. The sheets were so thin they were like cheesecloth.

Another disappointment was the dining room. We were hungry and so looking forward to a good meal. Well not at this hotel. They have one restaurant and it was serving a seafood buffet ONLY. No ala carte menu that night. How can a hotel with only one restaurant not offer its guests more of a choice than a seafood buffet? What if you were allergic to seafood? We ended up ordering room service and it was barely edible.

The highlight was the buffet breakfast the next morning. I will give them credit for that. It was an awesome breakfast, the best in all of Namibia. Unfortunately a breakfast doesn't make up for a poor sleep and poor dinner.

“Don't stay here!!!!”

Unless you' re the type to make a pile of your money and set it on fire - don't waste your money or your valuable holiday time HERE!!!! It's slim pickings in WIndhoek - but google bed and breakfasts!!!! I found a magic one in the similar price range for my return journy to Windhoek. [separate review]

Ugh! is the best way to describe this wretched faux Africa decor unless of course kitch is your style. Ugh! is the best way to describe the food unless of course you adore bad service and over cooked buffet fare. Ugh! is the only way to mention the bedding in the room unless of course you like to wonder if the sheets have been washed.

A more soul-LESS venue you could not find for love or money. Seriously folks. Seriously?

Rooms very average - be sure to request a room that overlooks the pool area. The pool has a "lazy river" running around it that was a hit with kids, no adults in the water too cold. Large breakfast buffet - pretty good. Dinner average, not very attentive service. The Chinese restaraunt was fun and average food. The hotel is not with in walking distance to anything, but you can take a walk around the golf course. Next time I woud stay in the city with walking access to shopping and dining. Word of caution - we (four adults) were seated in our van in front of the Department of Tourism in downtown Windhoek waiting for our guide who had briefly run in. A group of six local men walked up to one side of the van and began banging on it and making threatening gestrues. While they maintained our attention, another man went to the other side of the van, reached in an open window and stole a bag. Our guide told us this is a common practice throughout Namibia.

Have stayed here many times on business. Nice grounds and pool area and adjacent to a decent 18 hole golf course. Staff are friendly but frustratingly inconsistent in their training and efficiency of service...they don't sweat the details and it is not world class by any means. Not up to 4 star standards of service and generally the place is getting run down which is a shame as with proper management it could be delightful. Rooms can be noisy at night and beds are horribly uncomfortable with HVAC that is either too cold or non-existant - no central heating in winter months and it does get chilly here at nights. Food OK but always the same and after 2 or 3 dinners you'll be looking for a change. Rooms are generally clean but public areas often are not. It is a safe place to stay but I'm definitely looking for other options for my next trip.
