This JW Marriott is a luxurious well run American hotel in bustling Bangkok. That is the good news..... and a constraint.
The good news? I enjoyed my comfortable well appointed room with more than the usual US amenities and a nice view. Courteous service on check in and check out. Strong support in business services. This hotel is located in a shopping and restaurant neighborhood with lively if seedy street scenes. It is between two skytrain stops that offer ready access to the rest of the city. If your destination is served by the skytrain, you will find transit faster than a cab during rush hours. Absolutely no complaints. Nice to be able to count on a reliable JW Marriott experience with a bit of the extra friendliness of Thailand.
The limit? This is life within a US bubble, albeit a very nice bubble with Thai accents. Those interested in breaking out may do so easily. One morning, I walked east on Sukhumvit a few blocks, then north into a quiet upper middle class residential neighborhood. One afternoon, like many foreign visitors, I did the mandatory visit to Raj the tailor for custom fitted shirts and learned about the Punjabi subculture in Bangkok. On two days, Thai friends of longstanding took me into their homes and work. But with friends or without, try to break out of the international tourist/business bubble to get some sense of the ordinary lives of the millions of people of this amazing city.
