This is the second time I have stayed at the J W Marriott in Bangkok and for my two cents worth this is the best hotel in the city.
Location: It's located on one end of Sukhamvit (Soi 2), which is the busiest street in the city. The good part is that this makes getting out of the street easy.
Rooms: Extremely neat and functional. None of the over the top furnishings but still has everything you need. A nice touch is the umbrella they include in the room, which comes in handy during Bangkok's notorious showers
Shopping: Extremely close to Bangkok's two largest malls - Central World and Siam Square. No two guesses why my girlfriend enjoys this hotel the best.
Food: It's one of the only hotels in Bangkok in which eating in the hotel is fun. Tsu-nami the Japanese restaurant is phenomenal as is the Bangkok Baking Company. Plenty of other eating choices about, within a couple of minutes walk from the hotel
Staff: The friendliest and most helpful staff in Bangkok. They cater to every request you may have. An especially nice touch is that when they flag you a taxi, they make sure to write the taxi number down on a piece of paper and hand it to you just in case you forget something in there.
Misc: It's also located right next to the best tailor in the far east - Rajawongse (next to the Imperial Hotel) - who creates suits for President Bush and his family, Secret Service agents and a bunch of powerful people, all of who's visiting cards they proudly displays in the changing room. A bit more expensive than the run of the mill shops all over the city but well worth it once you put on one of the suits. I used to wear expensive Italian designer stuff, but now I swear by these guys.
All in all, as you can see, the perfect place to stay while in Bangkok!
