The Rama Garden hotel is just of the old airport. Most flights are now directed to the brand new airport at the other side of Bangkok, so the noise from airplanes flying over is minimal. I didn't hear any during my 5-day stay.
The hotel is situated outside the city center, you have to grab a cab for every move you make. Prices of cabs are pretty low for a Western foreigner, although you have to make sure the cab driver doesn't try to rip you off by requesting you to pay more because it is outside of the centre. Some cab drivers also don't know the hotel, but you can get a description of the location in credit card format at the reception.
Check-in was swift and pleasant. The rooms are big and provide you with enough space during the stay. Internet access can be requested through the reception, they will bring you a password and a cable to connect with. Prices range from 100 Baht for an hour to 500 Baht for a 24-hour period. Wireless internet is available in the lobby. During our stay it was free, but I don't know if this is normal. Connection on wireless can be flaky.
The bed I had was large, but the matrass was very, very hard, it was more like sleeping on the floor.
The whole electricity system in your room is only enabled when you are in the room with your key card inserted. Even the airco will shut down, making sure the room will be hot when you return from a long day. The airco makes a lot of noise, so it is not advised to keep it turned on during your sleep. Best solution (not climate wise) here is to get two key cards, so you can leave the airco on during the day to keep your room cool.
I wasn't too impressed with the breakfast options, I've had better hotels, also in Bangkok. Service during breakfast is not up to par, not what you expect in an Asian culture.
As I had a convention in the hotel itself, we tried most of the restaurants in the hotel itself. ' The Greenery ' is a buffet-style restaurant which I wasn't impressed with. The Chinese restaurant and Japanese restaruant were pretty good. Prices are ofcourse adjusted to hotel prices ; you can get a better deal (including taxi fares) by going into town. But it will take you more time, which was something I didn't have during my stay.
Check-out was a bit more troubling: after completing the paper-work and paying for it, they called someone to check my room. Nobody could explain me why they didn't start this procedure as soon as my started checking-out, as this cost an extra 10 minutes.
With regards to paying the bill: be sure to know whether you want to pay in Baht or in your local currency, by paying in local currency like USD, they are likely to charge you a 2 % increase , probably your credit card rates are better.
Conclusion: good hotel to stay at if you have a convention or meeting in the hotel itself. Otherwise, take another pick, for both luxury and proximity to Bangkok itself.
