I've always found it strange how so many airport hotels are able to charge a premium for below par accommodations and service. However, this is not the case with the Quality Suites. We used Asiarooms.com and paid 1,600 THB ($41 USD). My wife and I were stopping over in Bangkok on our way home from elsewhere in Thailand. Since we'd been to Bangkok many times and our layover was only 1 night, we decided to stay around the airport rather than trek into the city and have to return the next morning in time to catch a 06:30 flight. Due to our flight's late arrival at Don Muang's domestic terminal, our pre-arranged pickup had come and gone. We went to the information desk where they paged the driver to no avail, so we called the hotel using a pay phone. Since it was an issue with a previous poster, here's a how-to on using a Thai pay phone:
1)find a pay phone that accepts coins
2)insert a minimum of 1 BAHT (more if you like, but you won't get change and the call shouldn't cost more)
3) dial: 02 982 2022 46
4) arrange pick up
The driver arrived almost immediately, and 10 minutes later we were standing at the front desk. It's worth noting that the hotel runs the airport shuttle 24 hours a day. We were very pleasantly surprised at the level of professionalism and the quality of the property, given the competition's higher rates. Being a suite property, our's was a two room affair with a little kitchenette. There weren't any utensils or appliances other than a decent sized refrigerator and a large hot water boiler, but we had no intention of cooking. There was a dining room table with seating for 4 as well as a sofa, a spare chair, a coffee table and a few commodes/shelving units. The furnishings were in relatively good repair and there was nothing I would consider shabby. The TV was a bit on the small side at about 20" and the choice of English language programming was limited to 4 channels, one of which was HBO. The living/dining area was equal in size to the bedroom and both had huge separate a/c units (split system) that provided ice cold air. A balcony was accessible from this room. Our unit's bedroom had 2 queen beds with typically firm but comfortable mattresses. Linens were clean and not at all threadbare. There was a room safe in the ample closet, and my wife appreciated the full length mirrors and vanity hutch. The bathroom was clean and perfectly adequate, with a marble vanity and floor and no sign of mold or mildew around the tub.
We arranged for a 02:00 wakeup call and a 03:00 shuttle to the airport both of which were on schedule. As it turned out, we took a voluntary bump from an overbooked flight and needed a place to stay for another 2 nights. The Quality Suites kindly agreed to let us return to our recently vacated room, but advised us that their rate for subsequent nights would be 2,900 BAHT, and that we would do better using a travel agent. Luckily, there are a number of tour/hotel agents at BKK, so after a bit of tough negotiating we were able to book 2 more nights at 1,750 BAHT per night. The hotel shuttle then picked us up and we were able to catch up on some lost sleep.
Surprisingly, we really did enjoy the following two days at the hotel and the surrounding neighborhood. It had a much more relaxed atmosphere than the frenetic activity we are so used to in Bangkok proper. The property's location turned out to be very practical as you could:
1)walk for 10 minutes and catch the train to downtown Bangkok
2)walk 10 minutes to a big Foodland supermarket
3)take a 40 BAHT cab ride (or 30 minute walk) to Lotus/Tesco or Big C supercentres
4)eat at the local branch of the 13 Coins (Express) restaurant across the street (best bang/buck of any meal I've ever had in Thailand)
5)get a massage from a very professional establishment across the street
6)shop at the night market that appeared every night just by the corner
7)shop at one of the many different establishments nearby (pharmacy, 711, Internet café, bakery, barber, etc.)
The hotel was also located next door to some very posh homes, a few of which appeared to be gated mansions. The property's grounds also had a little landscaped park with a walkway around a fountain and spa pavilion. A small outdoor pool and gym were located off the lobby. The hot and cold buffet breakfast, included with most rates, was quite substantial, with both an assortment of varying Thai and Western dishes as well as a cooked to order egg station.
Our time here was well spent, and we never once regretted neither staying nor going into Bangkok. I wouldn't say the same were I a first time visitor wishing to take in all the sights, but as we are a bit jaded from too much Bangkok for too many years, it suited us fine. We would happily stay here again.
