Davis is a pleasant, comfortable property located on Sukhumvit Soi 24 (or Suk 24 to use the local shorthand). Just an aside -- many of Bangkok's minor streets are numbered based upon the main road which they intersect. Think of a spindly tree with branches. The trunk of the tree is "Sukhumvit" and the branches are numbered sequentially, with odd numbers or one side and even on the other. Confusingly though, the numbers do not increase on both sides of the street at the same rate, so although they start at "1" and "2" by the time you reach "24" on one side, you can easily be at "39" (or "11") on the other side!
Davis describes itself as a "boutique" hotel, but apart from the fact that it does not have 600 rooms as would a major hotel, there is little about it to my mind to qualify it for the small touches one would expect of a boutique property.
The lobby is pleasant and check-in was fine, with the rooms we booked matching the description on the website.
The breakfast as other reviewers have pointed out is quite adequate. It will get you started on your day but won't send you into a swoon.
Another reviewer has said that the bar had no more than 6 guests at any time "in spite of the singers". I'd amend that slightly to say "because of the singers"! A three member female troupe consisted of a piano player and 2 marginally harmonic vocalists, with volume set so high that it was impossible to have a normal conversation. Please, confine lounge entertainment to a piano played softly in the background. I'd seek out a karaoke bar if I really wanted to have my eardrums assaulted like that.
The pool area images on the hotel website accurately show that the pool is a small rooftop facility, located off the fitness rooms and spa. But there are a grand total of, by my count, 13 lounge chairs located on 3 sides of the pool, and several umbrella tables with chairs nearer the entrance. Maybe you don't come to Bangkok to sit in a lounge chair by a pool, but for a property where several hundred people are staying, 13 loungers is too few by any measure.
To make matters worse, I witnessed 2 separate groups one afternoon - a family of 4 and 2 men, who had staked out 6 of the 13 lounge chairs, and then retreated to the umbrella tables to have a long leisurely lunch! During this time, many other guests arrived and were unable to find anywhere to sit. And the staff appeared not to notice this selfish behaviour. I asked the staff later about this and suggested that they require those eating to relinquish their lounge chairs.
The skytrain is a good 15 minute walk up the Soi, and there is little of interest along the way. At the end of the Soi is Emporium, an upscale shopping galleria.
Reviewers who say that Davis is "not close to anything" may have a point, but Bangkok is so spread out that depending on what you especially think is important, nothing is actually "central" and you are going to have to take a taxi or public transit to get anywhere.
The rooms were comfortable and nicely appointed. In-room internet access charges are quite high - go find a cafe! The air conditioning had a habit of waiting to come on until the room was far hotter than the desired setting, and then remaining on until the room was icy cold. The range between high and low must have been in the order of 10C. Needs adjustment!
Davis overall is a pleasant place to stay, but don't expect it to live up to your notion of what a "boutique" hotel ought to be.
