We have just returned from 10 days in Thailand, four of which we stayed at the Ayatana Hamlet Spa Hotel in Chiang Mai. This was our first visit to Chiang Mai as we had booked prior to leaving Sydney Australia to visit the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai so we wanted a hotel we could just relax and enjoy afterwards (my husband attended a business conference in Bangkok prior to arriving here). We weren't disappointed. When we first stepped into the foyer of this lovely hotel and looked beyond to their pool patio area, we were knocked out by it. It was lovely and we were already impressed. The reception desk staff were so friendly and helpful we knew we had chosen the right accommodation and that impression only got better as we entered our room which was cool and roomy. Decorated in typical Thai tropical style with double wooden doors leading from our shower recess on to a latticed balcony for privacy, it was delightful. It was such a treat for us to open this up in the early morning to hear the birds chirping away outside. We used the hotel's free shuttle service and went to the Night Bazaar that first night and sampled some typical northern Thai dishes for dinner (we took a tuktuk back to the hotel). The following night, after a full day out with the elephants in the heat and dust, we welcomed a cool dip in the hotel's pool then after a relaxing drink beside their pool, we dined in the hotel's restaurant. It was delicious. So much so, that we ended up dining there the following 2 nights of our stay. The meal was inexpensive and we were still able to enjoy local Thai dishes. I even requested and received the chef's recipe for his delicious homemade pandanas leaf coconut ice-cream. With free internet service for patrons, it was really lovely sitting at their computer next to an open doorway which gave me the feeling I was sitting on a verandah. It was blissfully quiet at the time we stayed but I was told they were expecting a larger crowd due to the 'water festival' that was approaching. Am planning to return to the Ayatana next year. Wonderful!
