“Stayed for 1 week and loved it.”

The Field Village

We stayed in the field village for 1 week in Dec 2007 and it was excellent. We would go back again anytime. The rooms are very nicely done and the whole place is very quiet, relaxing and is surrounded by rice fields. This is really a boutique hotel, and there are a couple drawbacks that you need to be aware of. If you are ok with those, then I strongly recommend this place.

Strengths:

- the hosts are very friendly and can book tours etc for you. I very much recommend the 1 day Mahout Training course in Lampang Elephant Conservation Center - you learn to ride elephants bareback, take them bathing etc. Great fun, especially for kids. Probably was the highlight of our trip. The hotel can book it or you can use active thailand.
- we could stay as a family of 5 in one cabin which was very economical
- the pool is great, the rooms have a great atmosphere
- it has a boutique feeling, if you like that sort of thing (we did).

Drawbacks:

- hotel is about 15min out of town and finding taxis in Chiang mai can be difficult. Hence, you are best off to arrange a taxi to pick you up at a set place and time or you might get stuck (we almost did one evening). Also, count in the extra cost for the taxi fares that you will be paying and you will have to plan a bit more about when to go into town and back since it is a bit more involved than if you were staying right in town. In return, however, you get a very nice and serene place with a lovely view. Hotel restaurant is ok and is good for a couple dinners if you don't want to go out.

- the hotel is on the flight path and it can be quite loud when there are airplanes landing. They don't fly at night, but during the day, about every 20 minutes or so, there is a plane that flies over. The loudness varies from "I can hear the person next to me talk" to "Oh, was that a plane?" - depending on how they fly. It did not bother us because there are not that many planes, but if you think it will, then don't stay at this place.

Few months after the event but hey. Just want say that The Field Village offered everything we wanted from a quality, professionally run establishment. Ron, Jong - thanks! The room/bungalow was amazing. Attention to detail superb. Location/views - a breath of fresh air from Bangkok. Quick and easy transport to Chang-Mai is essential and a driver was always available. Jong sent us to the best places in town and organised some of the best excursions we went on in Thailand. We really wanted to extend our stay but our flights were non-transferable and to this day I still feel hard done by! Fascinating hotel.

“Best place we stayed in Thailand!!!”

The Field Village is amazing!

Five friends and I traveled to Thailand for two weeks in May and stayed in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Railay and Koh Lanta in various types of hotels/resorts and the Field Village was by far the best. The service from the owner and staff is absolutely incredible!

We were picked up at the airport and taken about 10 minutes to the Field Village, where we were shown to our rooms. The hotel is a cool group of teak wood bungalows with a common pool and restaurant/bar area. The weekend we were there, our group had the hotel to ourself (a benefit of traveling Thailand in the non-peak season), but the hotel staff was still fully available to assist us.

The first night, they opened the bar and we stayed up late chatting with the staff and owner while we drank and swam in the wonderful saltwater, infinity edge pool. The sunsets from this are awesome with mountains in the background.

The restaurant at the hotel provides a great, full-service breakfast and we also ate dinner at the hotel two nights; dinner was even better than breakfast! A great deal and delicious food. One of the nights, the owner, Jong (who is awesome) took us to a bar in downtown Chiang Mai she was familiar with that had great live bands. We were originally going to go to another place, but learned it was very touristy and this place Jong took us was awesome (The Riverside) - thanks Jong!

The rooms at the Field Village consist of teak bungalows with a separate bathroom area. They are tastefully decorated and spacious with a large bedroom, separate dressing area and bathroom. The bathrooms are great with nice, hot showers.

Overall, a great experience!!! I would definitely go back!

“Away from it all”

The Field Village

We found the Field Village to be a pleasant and relaxing place to stay away from the centre of Chiang Mai. The gardens were full of flowers and overlooked the rice fields and surrounding houses. We had arranged to be collected from the airport on arrival and on our first morning we collected our hire car which we had for the duration of our stay. We had no problems finding our way back to Field Village as there were signs at each junction from the main road. The driving was easy and it enabled us to explore the surrounding areas off the tourist paths and also to get into Chiang Mai in the evening to eat. We arranged to leave it at the airport as we left.

We stayed in 'Orchid' which had a lovely view across the fields and a fine verandah. The bed was very comforable although the room was rather dark and could have done with brighter lights, especially in the dressing area. The bathroom was rather basic and not cleaned to the standard I was expecting after reading other reviews on Trip Advisor.

The pool was a pleasant spot and a meeting place although, at the time we stayed, it looked as though there was a problem with the filter and it was not looking at its best.

Other reviewers have mentioned the 10% service charge but we found this to be the norm at other hotels we stayed at in Thailand. Our only problem was that the taxi we requested to take us to collect our hire car had been added to our bill without our knowledge at a rate set by the hotel and we did not have the option to pay a metered rate.

Yes, there were planes flying low over Field Village but it takes only a few seconds for them to be gone and we did not find them a problem.

The staff at the resort were friendly, kind and helpful and we ate there on our first evening. Jong was very helpful in providing information about places to visit and eat. She showed us round the gardens when she realised our interest. She made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble.

Management Response

We thank the guests for their nice comments.
With regard to the lighting and poll unfortunately there was a fault in the electricity station resulting in low power for a few days.We did provide candles for the rooms and although the pool was not its usual crystal clear it was safe to swim in.
Taxi drivers charge extra for coming out beyond the city boundary to pick up-but in context these are low charges

“Joy in the rainy Season”

The Field Village

5 of 5 stars

May 17, 2008

We were recommended to the Field Village by friends who stayed in the high season. So we were not surprised by the absolute beauty of the place or the incredibly warm welcome we received.
But we knew that there was a high chance of rain travelling in May.
To our surprise it actually improved the stay for us.
Jong was very good at forcasting the daily weather and we hardly missed going anywhere.
But the main surprise came when we realized that
1, We loved tropical rain which is warm and heavy bust usually over within an hour.
2. After the rain the colours and smells are magnificent-so vivid. The mountains in our view sprang out at us
3.There are fewer tourists so no need to book things in advance and everything is cheaper
The Field Village is so well equipped and the catering so good that we often stayed in.
One word of advice we would leave an extra day or two in your programme so that you can see everything and avoid the worst showers
Many thanks to all the wonderful staff who made us feel so welcome that we were sad to leave-we will be back
